Governor offers plainclothes National Guard to watch ballot drop boxes

In October 2024 a ballot box in Vancouver was set on fire and about 500 ballots were destroyed, and in mid-October the Secretary of State's office received a letter containing white powder; this week Gov. Bob Ferguson wrote to county election officials offering unarmed, out-of-uniform National Guard members to watch ballot drop boxes. KIRO 7 reports that Clark County has accepted, and a King County Elections spokesperson said the members would be extra eyes and ears at the county's 101 drop boxes and would not interact with voters. Drop boxes take ballots until 8 p.m. on Election Day, and ballots are collected and brought back every night.

KIRO 7 reported that around 2:22 p.m. on Oct. 23, two children riding e-scooters east on Center Road in Everett were hit by a car. The 5-year-old has life-threatening injuries and the 16-year-old rider was seriously hurt; both were taken to Providence Regional Medical Center, while the driver and two young children in the car had minor injuries, and the cause is under investigation. When grandchildren ride e-scooters, remind them to wear a helmet and stay off busy roads.

Late-night gunfire on Aurora Avenue leaves nearly 120 shell casings
10月22日星期四晚上11点左右，西雅图极光大道北1万号街区的一处停车场传出多起枪声，警察赶到时开枪的人已经跑了，也没发现伤者。据KOMO新闻报道，现场找到100多枚手枪和步枪弹壳，在附近上班的人担心自己的安全。晚上路过这一带，尽量开车、少步行；万一听到枪响，先趴低、找掩护，再打911。
Around 11 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, multiple shots were reported in a parking lot in the 10000 block of Aurora Avenue North in Seattle; the shooters had fled by the time police arrived, and no victims were found. KOMO News reports that more than 100 handgun and rifle casings were recovered, and people who work nearby are worried about their safety. At night, drive rather than walk through the area; if you hear gunfire, get low, take cover, then call 911.

KIRO's MyNorthwest reported on Oct. 23 that HMSHost, which runs airport concessions, filed a layoff notice with the state covering 135 Starbucks workers in Seattle and at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, including 13 at a Terminal A store that is closing. Starbucks says the contract was not renewed after the airport's bidding process, and its other airport locations stay open. The Terminal A layoffs are expected between Dec. 31, 2026, and Jan. 13, 2027, so family members working airport food service may want to look at other openings early.

Eastside Friends of Seniors is a Sammamish nonprofit whose volunteers give adults 55 and over in Issaquah, Sammamish, North Bend and nearby towns free rides, errands, chores and companionship. The Snoqualmie Valley Record reported on Oct. 23 that it is piloting a program in the Snoqualmie Valley that pays for state-approved home care aide training for selected participants, who can sit the state Department of Health certification after 75 hours; it is looking for about 20 people. Funding comes from King County's Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy and has been renewed through 2027, The pilot is for Valley residents or people willing to work there; a family member thinking of caregiving can look up eastsidefriendsofseniors.org.

Lushootseed is the ancestral language of many Indigenous communities in Western Washington, spoken from the Skagit River south to the Nisqually Basin. KIRO 7 reported on Oct. 23 that Jill La Pointe, granddaughter of the late language champion Vi Hilbert, now leads the Indigenous Peoples Institute at Seattle University and leads efforts to preserve a language that nearly disappeared; she says disease after European settlement wiped out more than 90% of her people and culture. It is the same logic as Chinese families teaching grandchildren Chinese: keep the language and you keep the roots.

Medicare's annual open enrollment period is under way and ends Dec. 7. According to a PBS NewsHour segment on Oct. 23, more than 30 million Americans have chosen Medicare Advantage plans run by private insurers, and this year insurers in some areas are leaving markets or dropping plans, so many seniors have to choose again.
美国的联邦医保计划每年这段时间可以更换，保险公司每年也可以改条款，所以「每年秋天看信、比价」是美国长者的固定功课。PBS节目里的嘉宾建议：先留意保险公司寄来的信，计划要变或要停就马上着手；可以打联邦医保热线，也可以找各州都有的免费咨询项目SHIP，那里的人不拿佣金。
In America Medicare plans can be changed during this window each year, and insurers can change their terms every year, so reading the mail and comparing prices each fall is a standing chore for seniors. The guest on the PBS segment advised watching for letters from your insurer and acting right away if a plan is changing or ending, then calling the Medicare hotline or the free SHIP counseling program every state has, whose staff earn no commission.

Chinese people are used to doing something once and having it settled for life, and switching insurance every year feels like a hassle. Here, not reading the mail and not comparing usually costs you. The guest also warned that, except in a few states, when you move from Medicare Advantage back to traditional Medicare, supplemental insurers can refuse you or charge more because of pre-existing conditions, so think it through before choosing. Having an adult child who speaks English sit in on one phone call is safer than guessing.
