Magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Tibet's Nagqu kills at least 16
据哥伦比亚广播公司(CBS)援引美联社报道，西藏那曲(Nagqu)当地时间10月22日晚上十点33分发生七级地震，相当于西雅图时间当天上午七点半左右。美国地质调查局说震中在那曲东北偏东约119英里，深约11英里。据官方媒体，至少16人遇难、54人受伤，至少339间房屋倒塌。这是当地5年来最强的一次地震，上千名救援人员已经到场。
CBS News, citing the AP, reports that a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Nagqu in Tibet at 10:33 p.m. local time on Oct. 22, about 7:30 that morning in Seattle. The US Geological Survey put the epicenter about 119 miles east-northeast of Nagqu and the depth at about 11 miles. State media said at least 16 people were killed, 54 injured and at least 339 homes collapsed. It was the region's strongest quake in five years, and more than 1,600 rescuers were deployed.

Leader of drug ring that supplied the Chinatown-International District gets ten years

He was arrested in December 2024 with a loaded gun; a month later, authorities seized 17 firearms in the case, five of them linked to him.

The Seattle Times reports that DSquared Hospitality, a Seattle caterer founded in 1986 and now run by three siblings, is laying off 83 people, more than a quarter of its staff: 62 full-time and 21 part-time, effective Dec. 20. Bellevue-based T-Mobile gave its employee cafeteria contract to the global food-service giant Aramark, and Benaroya Hall, home of the Seattle Symphony, switched to Sodexo Live!. The company is working with Aramark to have 57 of the workers hired.

Hanford is a closed federal nuclear weapons site in south-central Washington where thousands of workers have cleaned up radioactive waste, and a 2018 state law presumes that certain cancers, neurological and respiratory diseases among them are work-related. A ProPublica and Cascade PBS investigation published Oct. 22 found that of 102 new claims since 2023, the Energy Department recommended approving none; the state approved 75%, and the department appealed most of those; the report adds that the department has spent nearly $12 million on outside lawyers and experts fighting state compensation claims. Washington's Silenced No More Act bars employers from requiring workers to keep quiet about sexual misconduct at work. The Seattle Times reported on Oct. 21 that Seattle Amazon employee Laura Danbom has sued the company in King County Superior Court, saying a senior manager raped her on a 2023 work trip and that after she reported it to HR and New York police, Amazon told her not to discuss it at work and to keep working with him, in violation of the state law; Amazon says it investigates every report thoroughly and has zero tolerance for workplace sexual misconduct. Families with children at big employers can let them know that in Washington a company cannot make keeping a job depend on staying silent about this.

Secret Service sweeps Seattle for EBT card skimmers

An EBT card is the card the government uses to pay food benefits, and thieves plant skimmers on store card readers to copy the card's data and then drain the benefits. KIRO 7 reported on Oct. 22 that the Secret Service finished a two-day operation in Seattle on Wednesday to find and remove illegal card skimmers. Seniors who use EBT can check whether a card reader is loose or has an extra layer before swiping, cover the keypad when entering a PIN, check the balance often, and call the number on the back of the card if anything looks wrong.

Puyallup man's wheelchair stuck on tracks; he is killed by a freight train

Puyallup lies southeast of Tacoma, and freight rail runs through town. KING 5 reports that around 2 p.m. on Oct. 21, a 59-year-old man in a wheelchair got stuck while crossing the tracks near 201 North Meridian; two people tried to help but could not free him, and he was struck and killed by a BNSF freight train. Anyone crossing tracks in a wheelchair or with a walker or stroller should use marked crossings only and wait when signals flash and gates are down; BNSF also advises staying at least 15 feet from the tracks.

UW program helps younger memory-loss patients so they are not alone

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, and about one in ten patients is diagnosed at a younger age. KOMO reported on Oct. 22 that the UW Memory and Brain Wellness Center runs several programs for these families, including SOAR, a monthly outdoor walk with Seattle Parks and Recreation where patients and their families walk together and get to know each other. Families with someone newly diagnosed with memory problems can ask the doctor about support activities like this; caregivers need company too.

KOMO reported on Oct. 22 that the city added two zones in north Everett, one near Midnight Smoke and Grocery on Colby Ave. and one near the Safeway on Broadway Ave.; inside them, others may not hand food or goods to someone sitting or lying there. People nearby who want to give food to homeless neighbors should first learn where the zone boundaries are, so as not to break the rule by handing things over inside them.

King County plans to upgrade Route 7 with the RapidRide R Line in 2032, and community groups worry seniors will lose stops they know. Seniors used to Columbia City can ask family to look up bus routes to the West Seattle or Lake City markets.

美国文化一则American Customs
太平洋西北地区的人常把下一场大地震叫作「大的那一个」(the Big One)。据Cascade PBS10月22日的节目，1700年华州外海发生过一次大地震并引发海啸，大约公元900年西雅图断层也发生过一次大震，1949、1965和2001年西雅图都有过明显的地震。
People in the Pacific Northwest often call the next great earthquake 'the Big One.' According to a Cascade PBS program on Oct. 22, a great quake off the Washington coast in 1700 set off a tsunami, the Seattle Fault produced a large quake around the year 900, and Seattle felt significant quakes in 1949, 1965 and 2001.
美国人对地震的态度是「不知道哪天来，但一定会来」，所以不靠预测，靠各家自己提前准备：家里备水、备手电、备药，跟家人约好震后在哪儿碰头、找谁报平安。
The American attitude to earthquakes is that no one knows when, but it will come, so the approach is not prediction but each household preparing ahead: water, a flashlight and medicines at home, plus an agreed place to meet and a person to check in with after a quake.

The Chinese sayings about mending the roof before it rains and being prepared so there is nothing to fear say the same thing. The difference is that in America this is left to each household.
