AI-found flaw sends websites in Europe and the US offline
据美联社报道，PHP是一种编写网站的程序语言，一家网络安全公司估计，在能查出所用语言的网站里约70%用它。人工智能帮研究人员在PHP里找出多个严重漏洞，10月21日公开后，欧洲和美国的政府机构等纷纷把网站暂时下线修补，芬兰政府网站一度只能部分访问。联邦调查局警告，黑客可借漏洞远程执行代码，建议来不及更新的网站先下线；PHP基金会已发布修补程序。
The AP reports that PHP is a programming language for building websites, and a cybersecurity firm estimates it powers about 70% of sites whose server-side language is known. AI helped researchers find several serious flaws in it. After they were disclosed on Oct. 21, governments and other organizations in Europe and the US took websites offline to patch them, and Finland's government site was only partly available. The FBI warned the flaws could let attackers run code remotely and advised operators who could not update immediately to take sites offline. The PHP Foundation has released fixes.

Seattle mayor unveils new plan to bring people off the streets

The Seattle Times reports that Mayor Katie Wilson announced on Oct. 21 that an outreach approach tried in Pioneer Square before this summer's World Cup games will be used across the city: outreach workers list every person living outside in an area, then match each one with shelter or housing that fits their needs. In Pioneer Square, 70 of 80 people moved indoors. The city plans about 960 new shelter units in her first two years, with about 400 running by the end of this year, and she has proposed $37 million in next year's budget to expand shelter.

With other required classes such as PE and art, that leaves 20 minutes for lunch and 30 for recess, the state minimum. Superintendent Ben Shuldiner said instruction varied too much between schools. About a dozen schools have asked for waivers to keep their schedules, with decisions expected this week.

Under federal law, immigration agents making arrests without a judge's warrant must first have probable cause that the person is in the US unlawfully and is likely to flee. On Oct. 19 Washington Attorney General Nick Brown joined a coalition of states backing a lawsuit in Washington, D.C., that challenges the Department of Homeland Security's practice, saying agents often make such arrests without first judging whether a person is likely to flee. Families with relatives whose status is unsettled should keep the number of a trusted lawyer or legal-aid group handy.

Japanese American rights advocate Ruthann Kurose dies at 75
露丝安·库罗斯(Ruthann Kurose)是西雅图出生的日裔美国人权活动家，早年在国会议员办公室工作时，参与推动对二战期间被美国政府关押的日裔美国人作出赔偿。她10月15日在默瑟岛(Mercer Island)家中去世，享年75岁；西雅图的Aki Kurose中学就是以她母亲命名的。她晚年还担任北灯塔山(North Beacon Hill)一座亚太裔长者养老中心筹款的顾问，那是华州第一家面向亚太裔社区的就地养老中心，家人计划年底办追思会。
Ruthann Kurose, a Seattle-born Japanese American human rights advocate, worked as a congressional aide on the campaign for redress payments to Japanese Americans the US government incarcerated during World War II. She died at her Mercer Island home on Oct. 15 at 75; Seattle's Aki Kurose Middle School is named for her mother. Late in life she advised the fundraising for a North Beacon Hill center that is the state's first aging-in-place facility for Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, and her family plans a celebration of life at the end of the year.

Seattle's new 20-year growth plan would allow residential and mixed-use buildings up to six stories in the core of 30 neighborhood centers and add density along frequent-transit corridors. On Sept. 9 the Central Puget Sound Growth Management Hearings Board, ruling on an appeal from anti-growth activists and conservation groups, upheld major parts of the plan but found the city's environmental impact statement inadequate, halting the City Council's review. Mayor Wilson and City Attorney Erika Evans have challenged the ruling in court, while planners do supplemental environmental analysis due by September 2027.

The 737 MAX 10, the largest model in Boeing's 737 MAX family, has finally won FAA certification after years of delay, clearing it to be built and delivered to airlines. On Oct. 20 Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy visited Boeing's Everett plant to highlight the approval. Everett is north of Seattle, and families with someone working at Boeing or a supplier will welcome the news.

美国文化一则American Customs
美国小学的「课间休息」(recess)，多半是把午饭和户外玩耍连成一整块，孩子到操场上自由跑、自己找伴玩，老师只在旁边看着。华州是全美12个用法律规定小学每天必须有课间休息的州之一。
Recess in American elementary schools usually runs lunch and outdoor play together as one block: children run free on the playground and find their own playmates while adults supervise. Washington is one of 12 states whose law requires daily recess.
美国教育界几乎一致认为，小孩子一天里需要一段没人安排的自由玩耍时间。所以课间休息在这里不算「耽误上课」，而是写进了州法：上课超过五小时的日子至少30分钟。
Virtually all American educators agree that young children need unstructured time for play each day. So recess here is not seen as lost class time; it is written into state law: at least 30 minutes on any school day longer than five hours.
国内的课间十分钟和大课间做操，也是同一个道理：坐久了要起来动一动。不同在于国内的课间多半有安排，美国的课间讲究「放养」。两种做法都是为孩子好，接送孙辈时问一句「今天课间玩了什么」，就能听出孩子在学校过得怎样。
The ten-minute breaks and morning exercises in Chinese schools rest on the same idea: children who sit too long need to move. The difference is that Chinese breaks tend to be organized, while American recess is free-range. Both mean well, and asking a grandchild at pickup what they played at recess tells you a lot about their day.
