NPR reports that as US envoy Steve Witkoff began talks with Putin in St. Petersburg on Oct. 21 about ending the war, Putin announced he had released Hubbard at Trump's request and that Hubbard was already at Pulkovo Airport.

Belltown is a neighborhood just north of downtown Seattle. KOMO News reports that on Oct. 13, Graeme Dobbeck, a clerk at a 76 station at 351 Broad St., was shot and killed. The suspect, Michael Fleming, a 33-year-old Seattle man, was arrested in Chicago on Oct. 20. King County prosecutors have charged him with first-degree murder, and court documents say the two had been co-workers and the killing was premeditated.

GeekWire reports that Amazon plans to hire more than 300,000 people across its US warehouse and delivery network this holiday season, in seasonal, part-time and full-time roles. That is 20% more than last year and its largest holiday hiring target ever; seasonal workers earn an average of $20 an hour. Retail overall is shrinking: retailers added the fewest seasonal workers since 2008 last holiday season, and UPS plans to hire more than 100,000, about 9% fewer than last year.

Bob Ferguson picked 99 areas statewide from 152 applications and submitted them to the US Treasury, including areas in Kent, Federal Way and Renton. Chinese families in South King County may see new housing and shops built nearby. The new zones need Treasury certification and take effect Jan. 1, 2027.

Family of Seattle teacher killed on bike sues garbage hauler

On June 1, Christian Salyer, a 30-year-old elementary school teacher, was struck and run over while biking at 12th Ave S and E Yesler Way when a Recology garbage truck turned right across his path; CHS Capitol Hill Seattle reports his family has sued the company and the driver in King County Superior Court, saying video shows the driver didn't signal or check his mirrors. Anyone in the family who bikes or walks through intersections should know a big truck turning right has large blind spots, so it pays to wait. Recology said it cannot comment on pending litigation, and the city is not named.

Lack of childcare costs WA parents $5 billion a year

The Seattle Times reports that the nonprofit ReadyNation surveyed 600 Washington parents of children 5 and under in March and estimated that, for lack of affordable childcare, parents lose $5 billion in earnings a year and businesses another $1.3 billion. King County parents are hit hardest, losing $14,300 a year on average against a statewide $9,740; many Chinese families fill exactly this gap with grandparents minding the grandchildren. State figures put licensed childcare at about $21,000 a year on average, and some families wait months or more than a year for a spot.

Taiwanese bubble tea brand Gong Cha to open in West Seattle

Gong Cha, the Taiwanese bubble tea brand with more than 2,000 stores worldwide, has only one store in Washington; West Seattle Blog reports the second will open at 4706 California Ave SW alongside Dave's Hot Chicken, with a soft opening from Nov. 12 or 13 and a grand opening Dec. 3 and 4. Both are run by the Keshap Group, a family business from Kirkland, so grandkids who love bubble tea get another spot. The grand opening will have buy-one-get-one deals on select drinks, so expect crowds.

King County has about 5% of ballots back; Nov. 3 deadline
华州全部用邮寄选票，填好可以寄回，也可以投进各地的投票箱，今年中期选举的截止日是11月3日星期二；据西西雅图博客10月20日晚报道，金县1450207名登记选民里，金县选举局只收回了75189张选票，约5%。选举官员今年一直劝大家早投，可到目前为止，多数人还没寄回来。还没收到选票的，可以打金县选举局电话206-296-VOTE。
Washington votes entirely by mail: ballots can be mailed back or put in a drop box, and this year's midterm deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 3. West Seattle Blog reported on the evening of Oct. 20 that King County Elections had received 75,189 ballots from the county's 1,450,207 registered voters, about 5%. Election officials have been urging people to vote early, but so far most have not. Anyone who hasn't received a ballot can call King County Elections at 206-296-VOTE.

Alaska Air loses $147 million in third quarter on high fuel costs

美国文化一则American Customs
美国的「假日季」(holiday season)，大致从11月底的感恩节一直到新年，是1年里买东西、送礼最集中的时候。商家为了这一季，秋天就开始招季节工，亚马逊今年计划招30多万人，就是为这一季备的人手。
The American holiday season runs roughly from Thanksgiving in late November through New Year's and is the year's biggest stretch of shopping and gift-giving. Businesses start hiring seasonal workers in the fall to get ready; Amazon's plan to hire more than 300,000 people this year is staffing for exactly this season.
美国人过节讲究给家里每个人、给同事朋友都备一份礼物，很多零售商1年的生意有相当一部分压在这几个礼拜。人手不够就雇季节工，过完节合同到期，有的表现好的会被留下来转成长期工。
Americans tend to buy a gift for everyone in the family and for friends and co-workers, so retailers do a big share of the year's business in these few weeks. They fill the gap with seasonal workers whose contracts end after the holidays; some who do well are kept on as permanent staff.
这跟国内过年前的「年货季」是一个道理：腊月里商场、快递都忙得脚不沾地，临时帮工也多。两边都是1年一次的大节，人情要靠礼物走动，只是美国把这件事放在了阳历年底。
It works like the run-up to Chinese New Year back home, when shops and couriers are run off their feet in the last lunar month and temporary help is everywhere. Both are the year's one big festival, when relationships are kept up with gifts; the US just puts it at the end of the calendar year.
