News of Pope Leo XIV's lung cancer diagnosis broke on Oct. 13; he has had a lung nodule surgically removed; he reportedly does not smoke. Writing in The Conversation, University of Miami thoracic oncologist Estelamari Rodriguez says that over the past 15 years more women, never-smokers and younger people have been diagnosed, that about 20% of women with lung cancer never smoked, and that current screening guidelines cover only people aged 50 to 80 with a heavy smoking history.

At his Oct. 13 arraignment he pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of wire fraud and five of money laundering; trial is set for Dec. 21.

KIRO Newsradio reports that Washington, part of a bipartisan coalition of 45 states and territories, accused Ascend, Citron and Mayne of conspiring to inflate prices and limit competition, and on Oct. 14 announced settlements: Ascend pays $400,000, Mayne $650,000, and Citron, which has closed, agreed only to non-monetary terms. People who bought a generic prescription drug between May 2009 and December 2019 may be eligible for compensation.

The sides have now settled, with the state paying $25 million and the district $24.3 million; the state admits no fault. A child who begs for food at school or takes others' food is a sign that should be reported, and grandparents who notice something wrong with a neighbor's child should not look away.

Dora Cheng, a 17-year-old senior at Mercer Island High School, has self-published a picture book, The World Inside You, which uses trees, fire, fog, the ocean and the sun to stand for love, anger, fear, sadness and happiness, for children aged 5 to 10. She says she used to bottle up her feelings without knowing it was OK to let them out, and wants children to see what their emotions are telling them rather than run from them. She will read it at Lakeridge Elementary on Nov. 4; grandparents of young children can use the idea to talk with them about feelings.

Four calves were born during the census period, but only two survived to the July 1 census date. It is rare good news locally, and a story to share with grandchildren on a walk by the water.

美国文化一则American Customs
在美国，大公司被指控多收了消费者的钱，州检察长可以代表全州消费者去告。官司和解后，赔偿往往要消费者自己去「申领」：在规定的网站或电话登记，证明自己当年买过，才分得到钱。这次华州和仿制药厂的和解就是这样。
In the US, when big companies are accused of overcharging consumers, a state attorney general can sue on behalf of the whole state's consumers. After a settlement, the money often has to be claimed by consumers themselves: register on the designated website or phone line and show you bought the product to receive a share. Washington's generic-drug settlement works this way.
