US to import Russian diesel; experts doubt it will lower prices
Since Russia's war with Ukraine began, the US has banned imports of Russian oil. The Associated Press reports that on Oct. 9 Trump announced a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin: Russia will immediately supply the US more than 300,000 tons of diesel, 500,000 more in November and 4 million more after that. With the US war with Iran pushing up oil prices, the national average for diesel hit a record $6.53 a gallon on Sept. 22 and was about $6.28 on Oct. 9, up from under $3.70 a year ago. Several energy experts say the shipments are unlikely to bring US prices down noticeably.
COMMUNITY IMPACTDiesel fuels trucks and delivery networks, so when it costs more, so do the meat and vegetables trucked into supermarkets and online parcels; some businesses already add delivery fees. Experts estimate the imports might at most nudge prices down a little around New York and Philadelphia, with little change nationwide. Grocery bills are unlikely to fall soon, so keep comparing prices and buy on sale.

Online sneaker seller robbed at gunpoint; suspect charged
Facebook Marketplace is an online platform where many people buy and sell used goods. KING 5 reports that on June 12 a seller met a buyer he had arranged online at Skyway Park to sell two pairs of Nike Jordan sneakers worth $560; the buyer asked him to open his trunk and, when refused, pulled a gun, took the shoes and fled. Prosecutors say the 23-year-old is suspected of the same tactic to rob a phone seller in Lynnwood, and was convicted of three similar robberies in 2022. He was arrested July 1 and moved to the King County Jail on Oct. 8, charged with first-degree robbery.
COMMUNITY IMPACTSelling used goods online is common among local Chinese families, from furniture to children's old toys. The risk is meeting a stranger alone: in this case the buyer looked at the goods, then asked to see more in the trunk and used that moment to strike. Seniors selling something should meet in a busy place in daylight, bring a family member, bring only the item for sale, and not let the buyer see other belongings in the car or home.

Amazon cuts hundreds of jobs in its retail division
Amazon is headquartered in Seattle and runs cloud computing as well as its online store. The Seattle Times reports that this week Amazon laid off several hundred people in the retail division that runs its online store, in customer service, seller support and engineering roles in the US, India and the UK; fewer than 1,000 were affected, and it is unclear how many were in Seattle. A company spokesperson confirmed on Oct. 9 that it eliminated 'a small number of roles.' Amazon is investing heavily in AI; cuts in October 2025 and January 2026 totaled about 30,000 jobs, the largest in its history.
COMMUNITY IMPACTMany Chinese families in Greater Seattle have children working at tech companies like Amazon. Amazon's recent layoffs have come in smaller batches, department by department, so any team can be next. Families with someone in tech should keep a few months of living expenses in reserve; those on work visas should plan early, since their job and immigration status are tied together.

On Friday morning, Oct. 9, an equipment failure at Seattle City Light cut power to more than 6,000 customers in Shoreline and North Seattle; four Shoreline School District schools closed for the day and eleven more started two hours late. Power was back before 10 a.m., but the closures stood, upending many parents' work and pickup plans.
Bellevue weighs a sales-tax bump and car-tab fee for transportation
The Urbanist reports that the Bellevue City Council is weighing two new transportation funding sources: a 0.1% sales-tax increase, expected to raise about $100 million over 10 years, and a $20 car-tab fee, about $20 million over 10 years, with a vote possible next month. Households that shop and keep cars in Bellevue would pay a little more. Business groups and traffic-safety advocates are still arguing over whether the money should go first to widening intersections for drivers or to sidewalks and bike lanes.

West Seattle Blog reported on Oct. 9 that Chief Sealth International High School in West Seattle wrote to families that the encampment along Longfellow Creek, east of the school, is growing. The school has reported it through the city's Find It, Fix It app and asked parents to tell students to avoid the area for now.
Governor pledges to close ferry engine-crew pay gap
Washington State Ferries engine-room crews have long complained that they are paid less than deck crews, and on Monday crew call-outs caused major service disruptions. Gov. Bob Ferguson wrote to the union representing 417 engine-room workers pledging to address the pay gap, but said budget pressures mean it cannot be fixed right away; he has ordered a new salary survey to inform negotiations next summer. Seniors who ride ferries to the islands should still check the day's sailings before leaving.

American Customs
In the US, selling used things to strangers is ordinary: the garage sale in the driveway, Facebook Marketplace online; an old bookshelf or a stroller can find a new owner, and most deals are cash for goods, face to face.
Americans move often and have big homes full of things, so every move means clearing some out; selling what you no longer need is seen as thrifty and less wasteful, and nobody thinks it costs face. Meeting in person is quick and simple, at the price of meeting people you do not know.
The Chinese ideal of thrift, passing old things on to relatives and neighbors, shares the logic of American secondhand selling. The difference is that at home things pass among people you know, while here they are sold to strangers, so bring along the old caution about others: daylight, crowds and a companion.
