Administration suspends Microsoft from green-card sponsorship program
据美联社报道，副总统万斯10月8号宣布，暂停微软、Adobe及印孚瑟斯(Infosys)、塔塔(Tata)等外包公司使用一项替外籍员工办绿卡的劳工部程序。他指控微软去年裁掉约6000名美国员工，却拿到6300个H-1B工作签证和近3000张绿卡。总部在雷德蒙(Redmond)的微软回应说，约80%H-1B申请是给现有员工续签或转身份，不是新招人。
The Associated Press reports that on Oct. 8 Vice President JD Vance announced Microsoft, Adobe and outsourcing firms including Infosys and Tata are suspended from a Labor Department process used to sponsor foreign workers for green cards. He accused Microsoft of laying off about 6,000 American workers last year while obtaining 6,300 H-1B visas and almost 3,000 green cards. Microsoft, based in Redmond, responded that about 80% of its H-1B filings were to extend or change the status of existing employees, not to hire new people.

Two Seattle high schools to pilot weapons detectors
据KOMO新闻报道，西雅图公立学校董事会10月7号晚上一致通过决议，支持学区总监舒尔丁纳(Ben Shuldiner)在内森·黑尔(Nathan Hale)和雷尼尔海滩(Rainier Beach)两所高中试用武器探测门，全体师生进校都要走过。两校是主动申请加入的。学区计划12月开始，试到本学年结束。今年1月，雷尼尔海滩高中两名学生在离校几条街的公交站遭枪杀。
KOMO News reports that on the evening of Oct. 7 the Seattle Public Schools board unanimously backed a resolution supporting Superintendent Ben Shuldiner in piloting weapons detectors at Nathan Hale and Rainier Beach high schools; every student and staff member will walk through them to enter. Both schools asked to join. The district aims to start in December and run through the end of the school year. In January, two Rainier Beach students were shot and killed at a bus stop a few blocks from campus.

Costco settles marketing-email lawsuit for more than $14M

A Washington law bans false or misleading subject lines in commercial emails; shoppers sued Issaquah-based Costco, saying subject lines such as 'last day' and '5 Days Only' misled shoppers. A King County Superior Court judge gave final approval to the settlement last week: Costco pays more than $14 million, about $4.6 million of it to the lawyers, and denies wrongdoing. Washington residents who got the emails between June 2, 2021, and July 7, 2026, were eligible; the claim deadline was Aug. 24, and more than 313,000 valid claims came in.

DNA confirms Graham girl, 5, was killed by a dog
格雷厄姆(Graham)在皮尔斯县(Pierce County)乡间，8月13号一名五岁女童在家人朋友的院子里遇害，当时警方还不能确定是狗还是别的大型动物所为。据县警长办公室消息，DNA检验确认是这户朋友家养的大狗咬死了她；家人认识这条狗，事前没有任何担心。带孙辈去别人家做客，遇到大型犬，最好先请主人把狗拴好或关起来，孩子始终留在大人眼皮底下。
In rural Graham, Pierce County, a 5-year-old girl was killed on Aug. 13 in the yard of a family friend's home, and investigators at first could not say whether a dog or another large animal was responsible. The sheriff's office says DNA testing confirmed the friend's large dog killed her; the family knew the dog and had no concerns beforehand. When visiting a home with a big dog, ask the owner to tie it up or shut it away, and keep grandchildren within an adult's sight.

VA's new medical records system reaches Seattle in 2027

The Department of Veterans Affairs is the federal agency that provides veterans' health care and benefits; its Puget Sound system serves about 160,000 veterans a year. Deputy Secretary Paul Lawrence visited Seattle on Oct. 7, said there is no hiring freeze and no intention to cut benefits, and promoted a unified electronic health record that will let doctors see service injuries without patients repeating their history. Seattle's VA hospital is scheduled to switch in September 2027, with the nationwide rollout finishing in 2031; families with a veteran should check that records carry over.

Prostate cancer often has no early symptoms, and screening is usually a single blood test. Johnathan Tuiasosopo, a Samoan man in Des Moines, Washington, learned he had it at 57 during an annual exam; after surgery he has been cancer-free for more than two years and now urges people in the local Samoan community to get checked. His urologist advises anyone with a family history to start screening by 45 and, if results are normal, to repeat every two to four years; Chinese men with a family history can ask their family doctor for the same blood test.

Mercer Island starts replacing its main water pipeline Oct. 12
默瑟岛(Mercer Island)全岛的自来水靠一条主水管输送，市政府要把其中关键的一段换成更结实可靠的新管。工程10月12号开挖，先在加拉格山路(Gallagher Hill Road)把一段旧石棉水泥管换成10英寸球墨铸铁管，从船坡道一路往山上铺的24英寸大管预计11月中旬开工。供水工程预计2027年4月完工，之后东南36街等路段还要重铺路面、修人行道，住在附近的居民出门要留意施工。
Mercer Island's water comes through one main pipeline, and the city is replacing a key section with a stronger, more reliable pipe. Digging starts Oct. 12, first swapping an old asbestos-concrete line on Gallagher Hill Road for a 10-inch ductile iron main; the 24-inch line running from the boat ramp up the hill is expected to start in mid-November. The water work should finish by April 2027, followed by repaving and new sidewalks on Southeast 36th Street and other roads, so nearby residents should expect construction.

25 years after prosecutor Tom Wales was killed, FBI asks people to come forward
威尔斯(Thomas Wales)是西雅图的联邦检察官，2001年10月11号在安妮女王山(Queen Anne)家中地下室用电脑时，被人隔着窗户开枪打死，凶手至今没有落网。本周日（10月11号）就满25年，联邦调查局西雅图负责人赫林顿(W. Mike Herrington)说，他们认为这是多人策划的谋杀，手上有多名重点关注对象，呼吁知情人主动出面。此案合计悬赏250万美元，线索可以在联邦调查局网站上在线提交。
Thomas Wales was a federal prosecutor in Seattle; on Oct. 11, 2001, he was shot through a window while working at his computer in the basement of his Queen Anne home, and the killer has never been caught. With the 25th anniversary this Sunday, Oct. 11, FBI Seattle Special Agent in Charge W. Mike Herrington said investigators believe several people planned the killing, have multiple persons of interest, and want those who know something to come forward. A combined $2.5 million reward is offered, and tips can be submitted to the FBI online.

美国文化一则American Customs
在华州和不少别的州，老百姓可以自己发起「公民提案」，凑够签名就能把一条法律放上选票，由全体选民投票决定。今年11月的第六四五号提案，就是要废除州议会新近通过的高收入所得税。
In Washington and a number of other states, ordinary people can start a citizen initiative: gather enough signatures and a law goes on the ballot for all voters to decide. Initiative 645 this November seeks to repeal the high-earners income tax the Legislature recently passed.
美国人相信权力来自老百姓。州议会立法之外，一些州给选民留了一道直接出手的门，既能自己提出新法，也能推翻议会通过的法。所以在这些州，一条法律通过了不等于定了，选民还能再投一次。
Americans hold that power comes from the people. Besides lawmaking by the legislature, some states leave voters a door to act directly, both to propose new laws and to overturn ones the legislature passed. So in those states a law passing is not the last word; voters can weigh in again.
中国人讲「众人拾柴火焰高」，大事要大家商量着办。在美国，这个「商量」落在一张选票上。入了籍的长辈，选票寄到家，可以请子女把提案的意思讲清楚，但最后打哪个勾，由自己拿主意。
The Chinese saying goes that when everyone adds firewood the flame burns higher: big matters are settled together. In the US, that 'settling together' happens on a ballot. Naturalized elders can ask their children to explain what a measure means when the ballot arrives, but which box to mark is their own call.
