Cumberland, a small community in South King County less than an hour from Seattle, is where Tukwila-based Segale Properties plans to mine up to 55 million cubic yards of rock, sand and gravel on 990 acres and run an asphalt plant for three decades; residents worry about water quality and the area's quiet. The company says its Auburn mine will run out within three to five years, and without a new one, building homes and roads will cost more, making housing harder to afford. King County called for a full environmental review in July, and a draft is expected next summer.

10月4号周日下午约五点，东区消防救援队发布消息，说正在北本德(North Bend)东北约12英里的中叉斯诺夸尔米(Middle Fork Snoqualmie)步道口附近救援一名坠落的登山者，随后证实人已不幸身亡。这是近几周华州山里又一起死亡事故，9月斯卡吉特县(Skagit County)的索克山(Sauk Mountain)有两人分别坠亡，魔法湖区(Enchantments)也有一名女子遇上突来的暴风雪身亡。秋天山里天气变得快，家里年轻人进山前要把路线告诉家人，带够保暖衣物，天黑前下山。

Around 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, Eastside Fire and Rescue announced a rescue under way for a fallen climber near the Middle Fork Snoqualmie trailhead, about 12 miles northeast of North Bend, and soon confirmed the climber had died. It is the latest of several backcountry deaths in Washington in recent weeks: two people died in separate falls on Sauk Mountain in Skagit County in September, and a woman died in a sudden snowstorm in the Enchantments. Mountain weather turns fast in the fall, so young people in the family should tell someone their route, carry warm layers and be off the mountain before dark.

King County Metro apprenticeships pay workers while they learn a trade

金县公交(King County Metro)开办六种注册学徒培训，有公交车修理、轻轨电工、轨道维修等，现有30多名学员，学完保证在金县公交就业。学徒起薪每小时近36元到40多元，轻轨电工学徒4年学完时薪可到60元，相关的大学课程费用由公交局出。家里有不想读4年大学、又想学门手艺的孙辈，这是一条边挣钱边学本事的路，公交局一般每年春天开放申请。

King County Metro runs six registered apprenticeship tracks, including vehicle mechanics, light rail electrical work and track maintenance; the current class has more than 30 students, and graduates are guaranteed a job with Metro. Apprentices start at nearly $36 to more than $40 an hour, light rail electrical apprentices can reach $60 an hour by the end of a four-year program, and Metro pays for related college classes. For grandchildren who want to learn a trade rather than go to a four-year college, it is a way to earn while learning; Metro usually opens applications each spring.

Southern Resident killer whales, Puget Sound's endangered orca population, have barely been in local waters this year, and researchers with the SeaDoc Society in the San Juan Islands call it really bad. They rely on Eba, an 11-year-old rescue dog, to sniff out whale scat floating on the water from aboard their boat; the samples show whether the whales are eating enough and how stressed they are, and the researchers say she is the only dog in the world trained for the job. Eba was a stray on the streets of Sacramento and began training in 2019, a story worth telling grandchildren on the next ferry ride.

Five of nine Washington Supreme Court seats are on the ballot this fall

华州最高法院对州法有最终解释权，11月3号的选举中，九个席位里有五个要改选，包括首席大法官，这是几十年来头一回过半数席位同时上选票。新选出的法官任期6年，往后可能要审理新开征的9.9%高收入所得税等法律；法官选举不分党派，选票上不标党籍。选票和选民手册最晚10月16号周五寄出。

The Washington Supreme Court has the final word on state law, and in the Nov. 3 election five of its nine seats, including the chief justice's, are on the ballot, the first time in decades that a majority of seats is up at once. Winners serve six-year terms and may hear cases on laws such as the new 9.9% income tax on high earners; the races are nonpartisan, so no party appears on the ballot. Ballots and voters' pamphlets will be mailed by Friday, Oct. 16.

据瑟斯顿县(Thurston County)警长办公室，10月2号周五早上，奥林匹亚(Olympia)莉莉路(Lilly Road NE)一处公寓闯进两名男子，警方说他们带着刀具；住户醒来后合力反击，其中一人的女友抄起一尊佛像砸中闯入者的头。两名嫌犯当天先后落网，一人躲在附近灌木丛里，另一人骑自行车逃到加油站被拦下；住户的一个朋友挨了几下，无大碍。夜里门窗要锁好，真遇上有人闯进来，能脱身先脱身，马上打911，别为财物硬拼。

According to the Thurston County Sheriff's Office, two men broke into an apartment on Lilly Road NE in Olympia on Friday morning, Oct. 2, armed with what the sheriff's office called an edged weapon; the residents woke up and fought back, and one of their girlfriends hit an intruder over the head with a Buddha statue. Both suspects were caught later that day, one hiding in nearby bushes and the other stopped at a gas station after fleeing on a bicycle; a friend of the residents was hit several times but will be okay. Lock doors and windows at night, and if someone does break in, get out if you can and call 911 right away rather than fighting over property.
