U.S. adds just 29,000 jobs in September as unemployment ticks up
The jobs report is the Labor Department's monthly count of new U.S. jobs, often read as the economy's temperature. NPR reported on Oct. 2 that employers added just 29,000 jobs in September, far fewer than expected; July and August were revised down by a combined 60,000, leaving July with a net loss. Unemployment rose from 4.1% to 4.2%, and average wages were up only 3% from a year ago, not keeping pace with prices; more than 27% of the unemployed have been out of work six months or longer.
COMMUNITY IMPACTSlow hiring with few layoffs means most people who have jobs are holding on, while new graduates and people returning to work have the hardest time getting in. For Chinese families here: a grandchild's job search may take a few months longer, so patience helps; anyone taking out a mortgage or car loan should keep in mind that rates remain high.

Warm-water pulse raises West Coast sea level; Washington coast faces higher water
A Kelvin wave is a bulge of water that forms when equatorial trade winds weaken and warm water piled up in the western Pacific surges east, then runs north along the coast of the Americas. KOMO reported on Oct. 2 that, as a super El Niño develops, a stronger-than-usual Kelvin wave is raising sea level along the West Coast; the AP reported on Oct. 3 that levels will rise six inches to a foot starting this month, pushing north from California to Oregon and Washington at about 150 miles a day, with several pulses through February.
COMMUNITY IMPACTHigher water does not by itself bring big waves, but during high tides and storms, coastal flooding and beach erosion will be worse than usual. For Chinese families here: before taking grandchildren to the beach, tide pools or fishing this fall and winter, check the tide times, avoid king tides and stormy days, and don't linger on rocks or tide flats.

Seattle proposes paid street parking in two neighborhood business districts
Street parking on the main drags of the West Seattle Junction and Upper Queen Anne is free today. KOMO reported on Oct. 3 that the Seattle Department of Transportation is recommending paid parking: two-hour limits from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, $1 an hour until 11 a.m. and $4 an hour after that, with the money going to the city's general fund. SDOT is aiming for early 2027.
COMMUNITY IMPACTSDOT says 75% or more of businesses report that customer parking is hard to find, and paid parking is meant to free up spaces faster; residents who object worry that cars will spill onto residential streets. For Chinese families here who drive elders to appointments or shops in these areas, watch the posted hours from next year and move the car on time to avoid a ticket.
