Months after the deadly shooting at the Bite of Seattle at Seattle Center, then-police chief Shon Barnes resigned, and the city is now running a nationwide search for his replacement. KOMO reported on Sept. 29 that at the second of three public listening sessions, residents said they want an experienced chief who values community involvement and takes on gun violence. One session remains, and Chinese residents who care about public safety can watch for it and bring their neighborhood's concerns in person.

Audit finds Seattle police use city traffic cameras with no written policy

西雅图交通局(SDOT)在路口装有交通摄像头，本来是用来看路况的。据KOMO报道，市审计办公室在年度监控技术审查中发现，警察局的「实时犯罪中心」可以调用这些摄像头画面，却没有成文规定约束怎么用。在意隐私的居民可以留意市里接下来是否为此立规矩。

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) runs traffic cameras at intersections, originally meant for watching road conditions. KOMO reported that the City Auditor's annual review of surveillance technology found the police department's Real-Time Crime Center can use those camera feeds with no written policy governing how. Residents who care about privacy can watch whether the city now sets rules for it.

US ban on nearly $1 billion of Canadian goods takes effect

Trade friction between the US and Canada has been escalating, and Washington state does a great deal of business with Canada. KOMO reported that a US ban on nearly $1 billion of Canadian products has taken effect, covering alcohol, certain dairy products and motorcycles, as Canada's ambassador to the US visited Seattle. Experts say existing inventory and some exemptions mean shoppers may not notice right away, but families who buy Canadian dairy can keep an eye on shelf prices.

One sentence on the ballot could sway Washington's millionaires tax vote

华州议会今年3月通过一项税，对家庭年收入超过100万美元的部分征收9.9%，11月选票上的I-645提案要把它废除。据KOMO报道，新民调显示，选票上附带的州检察长办公室说明写着废除将「减少」中小学、高等教育和以医疗为主的公共服务经费，这句话明显影响选民的态度。收到选票的华人选民，投票前可以把这段说明和双方的理由都读一遍。

In March the Legislature passed a 9.9% tax on household income above $1 million a year, and Initiative 645 on the November ballot would repeal it. KOMO reported that a new poll shows the Attorney General's statement attached to the ballot, saying repeal "would decrease funding" for K-12, higher education and human services, mainly health care, noticeably shifts voters' support. Chinese voters can read that statement and both sides' arguments before filling in their ballots.

贝尔维尤(Bellevue)测速摄像头10月起开罚单

Bellevue speed cameras start issuing tickets in October

贝尔维尤为减少交通死伤，在公园、医院和学校附近超速严重的四个路段装了测速摄像头，外表看着像路边的电箱。据KIRO 7报道，8月30天试运行期间一共寄出12589封警告信，每日超速次数下降约40%，10月起开始开正式罚单，每张124美元，学区路段加倍。四个路段包括148大道东北(148th Avenue NE)和东北第八街(NE 8th Street)各一段、森林大道东南(Forest Drive SE)两段，开车经过请放慢。

To cut traffic deaths and injuries, Bellevue installed speed cameras on four stretches with heavy speeding near parks, hospitals and school walk zones; they look like roadside electrical boxes. KIRO 7 reported that a 30-day trial in August sent out 12,589 warnings and daily speeding fell about 40%; real citations start in October at $124 each, doubled in school zones. The stretches are on 148th Avenue NE, NE 8th Street and two on Forest Drive SE, so slow down when driving through.

Chinatown Block Watch marks eight years with an evening patrol

唐人街守望队(Chinatown Block Watch)是街坊志愿者组成的巡逻队，平时在街区走动，留意治安和环境。据《西北亚洲周报》报道，9月20号守望队以一次夜间巡逻纪念成立八周年，西雅图警察局一名警员到场看望，志愿者在兴禧公园(Hing Hay Park)捡走12个空啤酒罐，之后在Diamond Bay餐厅吃了中秋晚餐。住在国际区附近、腿脚还利索的长者，可以考虑加入这样的街坊守望。

Chinatown Block Watch is a volunteer patrol of neighbors who walk the district keeping an eye on safety and upkeep. Northwest Asian Weekly reported that on Sept. 20 the group marked its eighth anniversary with an evening patrol with a visit from a Seattle police officer; volunteers picked up 12 empty beer cans at Hing Hay Park, then shared a mid-autumn dinner at Diamond Bay. Seniors near the International District who are still steady on their feet might consider joining a neighborhood watch like this.

Washington's school funding soared, but reading and math scores flattened

2012年华州最高法院审理「麦克利里案」(McCleary)，认定州政府对基础教育拨款不足，此后大笔资金流入公立学校。据《西雅图时报》9月29号报道，全州教育收入从2012至一三学年的134亿美元（按今天币值）涨到2024至二五学年的210亿美元以上，但全国统考的阅读和数学成绩先小幅上升、后基本持平，2025年州考中有32%的4年级学生阅读没能稳定达到年级水平。家里有孙辈在公校读书的，可以多看看孩子的阅读和数学成绩，落后了及早找老师谈。

In 2012 the state Supreme Court's McCleary decision found Washington was not adequately funding basic education, and billions have since flowed into public schools. The Seattle Times reported on Sept. 29 that statewide education revenue rose from $13.4 billion in 2012-13 (in today's dollars) to more than $21 billion in 2024-25, yet national reading and math scores inched up and then largely flatlined; on 2025 state tests, 32% of fourth graders were not consistently reading at grade level. Grandparents with grandchildren in public school can keep an eye on reading and math results and talk to the teacher early if a child is falling behind.

Bellevue College's Leslie Lum brings a Cantopop musical to free readings this week

Leslie Lum与贝尔维尤学院渊源很深，在西雅图一带生活了约30年，生在加拿大温哥华唐人街旁的老街区，家里几代人都经历过排华年代。据《西北亚洲周报》报道，她的新音乐剧《猫国》(Cat Country)用粤语流行曲风格的原创歌曲，讲一位华裔女子左右周旋求生存的故事，她为此专门研究了梅艳芳的歌。剧本朗读会10月2号在贝尔维尤学院的Stop Gap剧场、10月3号在西雅图ReAct剧场举行，免费，但须事先在geomancer.site网站登记。

Leslie Lum, long affiliated with Bellevue College and in the Seattle area for about 30 years, grew up in Vancouver's Strathcona neighborhood next to Chinatown, in a family whose generations lived through Chinese exclusion. Northwest Asian Weekly reported that her new musical, Cat Country, uses original Cantopop-style songs to tell the story of a Chinese American woman playing all sides to survive, and that she studied Anita Mui's music for it. Staged readings are Oct. 2 at Bellevue College's Stop Gap Theatre and Oct. 3 at Seattle's ReAct Theatre; tickets are free but registration is required at geomancer.site.
