Five arrested near U.K. air base used by U.S. forces on suspicion of plotting terror
费尔福德空军基地(RAF Fairford)在伦敦以西约160公里，属英国所有，伊朗战争中美军轰炸机从这里起飞。据美联社9月28号报道，9月27号凌晨有人报告基地附近有可疑车辆，警方随后以涉嫌准备实施恐怖袭击逮捕五名20多岁、来自伦敦的英国男子，附近85户居民被疏散。伊朗方面否认与此事有关。
RAF Fairford, about 100 miles west of London, is a British-owned base that U.S. bombers have flown from during the Iran war. The Associated Press reported on Sept. 28 that after a late-night report of suspicious vehicles near the base in the early hours of Sept. 27, police arrested five British men in their 20s from London on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism, and 85 nearby homes were evacuated. Iran denied involvement.

An open-air drug market at 12th Avenue and South Jackson Street has persisted for years.

New flu vaccine for adults 50 and over; insurance coverage unsettled

The Seattle Times reported on Sept. 28 that a new flu vaccine is available in Washington this fall: Moderna's shot uses the same mRNA technology as COVID vaccines and is FDA-approved for adults 50 and over. More than 250 Washingtonians died of flu last season, and more than 500 the season before. The federal advisory committee that normally recommends vaccines has not met this year, so coverage is unsettled; without insurance a dose costs about $171.

After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against some of the Trump administration's tariffs, Issaquah-based Costco received $184 million in tariff refunds from the federal government and says it will use the money to cut prices on some items. An attorney representing members in a potential class action argues members who paid higher prices because of tariffs should get refund checks; Costco has asked a judge to dismiss the suit. KIRO 7 reported on Sept. 27 that Costco has not said which items will get cheaper, so regular shoppers may want to watch the price tags.

据KIRO 7电视台9月27号报道，联邦路(Federal Way)一处公寓发生火灾，房子被烧毁，40人无处可住。警方说，起火原因是炸薯条。家里炸东西时人别离开灶台，油锅着火先关火、盖锅盖，千万不要泼水。
KIRO 7 reported on Sept. 27 that a fire destroyed apartments in Federal Way, leaving 40 people with nowhere to live. Police say the fire was started by French fries being cooked. Stay by the stove when frying, and if the oil catches fire, turn off the heat and cover the pan; never pour water on it.

阿尔茨海默病健步走10月3号在西雅图中心举行
Walk to End Alzheimer's is Oct. 3 at Seattle Center
阿尔茨海默病就是俗称的老年痴呆，据科莫新闻(KOMO)9月27号报道，华州有超过12.6万人患病，金县65岁以上的人里将近11%患有这种病。阿尔茨海默病协会10月3号在西雅图中心(Seattle Center)举办「终结阿尔茨海默病健步走」，为这种病募款、让更多人了解它。家里有人照顾患病老人的，可以借这个机会认识同样处境的家庭。
Alzheimer's disease affects more than 126,000 people in Washington, and nearly 11% of King County residents 65 and older have it, KOMO reported on Sept. 27. The Alzheimer's Association holds its Walk to End Alzheimer's on Oct. 3 at Seattle Center to raise money and awareness. Families caring for a relative with the disease can use it to meet others in the same situation.

Washington's drive-up coffee stands serve up neighborliness
开车到窗口买咖啡的小亭子，在华州几乎到处都是，据科莫新闻(KOMO)9月27号的报道，这种做法是跟着本地咖啡文化长起来的，1980年西雅图市中心就有了推车卖咖啡。柯克兰(Kirkland)一家咖啡亭的店主说，熟客的名字、爱喝什么、家里人和养的狗她都熟，「更像一家人」。长者自己不开车，下回坐儿女的车路过，不妨让他们拐进去买一杯，看看这份街坊人情。
Drive-up coffee stands are found almost everywhere in Washington, and KOMO reported on Sept. 27 that the format grew up with the region's coffee culture; by 1980 a cart was already selling espresso in downtown Seattle. The co-owner of a stand in Kirkland says she knows her regulars' names, drinks and families, and that it feels more like family than customers. Seniors who don't drive can ask their children to pull in next time and see the neighborliness for themselves.

Pierce Transit sales-tax measure goes to voters in November

Pierce Transit's Proposition 1 would raise the sales tax by 0.3% to pay for more bus service and goes to voters in the transit agency's service area on Nov. 3. The Urbanist reported on Sept. 26 that if it passes, service would grow 49%, with four new routes, every route running at least every 30 minutes and many running later at night. Voters rejected similar measures in 2011 and 2012, and seniors in the Tacoma area can read the voters' pamphlet before voting.

Oxford Economics index ranks Seattle fourth among world cities
牛津经济研究院(Oxford Economics)是英国一家商业咨询公司，每年给全球1000座城市按经济、人才、生活质量、环境和治理打分。据《西雅图时报》9月28号报道，今年西雅图排在纽约、伦敦、巴黎之后，位列第四，排在旧金山、东京前面，经济一项全球第四。报告也点出了短板：房价高、贫富差距大、财产犯罪仍然偏多。
Oxford Economics, a British advisory firm, scores 1,000 cities worldwide each year on economics, human capital, quality of life, environment and governance. The Seattle Times reported on Sept. 28 that this year Seattle ranks fourth, behind New York, London and Paris and ahead of San Francisco and Tokyo, and fourth in the world on economics. The report also names the weak spots: high housing costs, wide income inequality and still-elevated property crime.

美国文化一则American Customs
美国人每年秋天有个习惯：打流感疫苗。9月一过，药房门口、超市里就挂出「这里打流感针」的牌子，很多地方不用预约，拿着保险卡进去，十来分钟就打完。医生诊所、社区诊所也能打，金县公共卫生局还设了电话帮人找接种点。
Americans have an autumn habit: the flu shot. Once September comes, pharmacies and supermarkets put up "flu shots here" signs, many take walk-ins, and with an insurance card the whole thing takes about ten minutes. Doctors' offices and community clinics give them too, and Public Health – Seattle & King County runs a phone line to help people find one.
美国看病贵，住一次院的账单能让一家人头疼，所以这边的想法是花小钱防大病：普通流感针很多保险计划都给付，比得了重症再进医院划算得多。流感病毒年年变，去年的针今年不管用，所以要年年打。
Medical care here is expensive and one hospital stay can strain a family, so the thinking is to spend a little to avoid a lot: many insurance plans cover a standard flu shot, which is far cheaper than treating a severe case. The virus changes every year and last year's shot does not cover this year's, so people get one every fall.
咱们老话讲「上医治未病」，意思就是病还没来先把门关好。美国人年年排队打流感针，道理跟咱们秋天贴秋膘、换厚被子一样，都是赶在天冷之前把身子护好。
An old Chinese saying holds that the best doctor treats illness before it starts. Americans lining up for a flu shot every fall is the same idea as putting on a little weight and switching to a thicker quilt before winter: protect the body before the cold arrives.
