King County proposes a sales tax for shelter and affordable housing

About 300 affordable units in the plan are in Kirkland, Burien and Seattle's Chinatown International District.

Judge bars federal SNAP fines against Washington and other states

SNAP is the federal food-benefit program for low-income households. Last year the administration moved to restrict SNAP for tens of thousands of green-card holders and gave states a deadline, raising the prospect of hundreds of millions in fines; it later dropped the eligibility change but still argued states could be fined. A federal judge has now permanently ruled out those fines, and made clear the usual five-year wait does not apply to green-card holders who were refugees, asylees or certain humanitarian immigrants; Washington Attorney General Nick Brown was among the challengers.

On Saturday night, Sept. 19, a masked man held a cashier at gunpoint at a 76 station on Ambaum Boulevard SW in Burien, the store's third robbery in three weeks, with about $4,000 to $5,000 taken in total. Owner Atinder Dahb says two employees work the night shift; he plans $15,000 of bulletproof glass around the counter and has given his video to the King County Sheriff's Office. At night, go with someone, carry little cash, and leave first and call police if something looks wrong.

Assistant Chief Ernie Walters said the water is extremely cold and the rocks slippery, and warning signs are posted. With grandchildren, watch from the bank and stay out of the water.

Parents' voices carry real weight when American public schools change rules. Seattle's superintendent announced the K-2 screen limit at a news conference, and a parent group, Seattle Families for Intentional Tech, spoke up in support, saying classroom overreliance on screens is a leftover from the pandemic.

U.S. school districts are run by school boards that local voters elect, and parents are among those voters, so rule changes are explained to them in public. In April the same superintendent announced a districtwide ban on phones during the school day for elementary and middle schools.
