据哥伦比亚广播公司(CBS News)报道，特朗普总统9月18号表示，不再让CNN、MS NOW和Politico三家媒体进入白宫，他给出的理由是这三家发的是假新闻。19号上午，三家媒体的白宫记者到门口刷卡时被拦下，记者证当场失效或被收走。MS NOW发表声明说将为宪法第一修正案赋予的权利采取一切必要步骤；CNN说无论进门的限制如何，监督政府的工作都会继续。白宫记者协会主席说，以报道内容为由排除一家媒体的标准可以用在任何一家身上，要求立即恢复采访权限。
CBS News reports that on Sept. 18 President Trump said CNN, MS NOW and Politico would no longer be allowed into the White House, his stated reason being that the three report fake news. On the morning of Sept. 19 their White House reporters were stopped at the gate and their passes disabled or confiscated. MS NOW said it would take any and all steps necessary to defend its First Amendment rights; CNN said its mission to report on the government would continue regardless of restrictions on physical access. The head of the White House Correspondents' Association said a standard used to exclude one outlet over its coverage could be applied to any outlet, and called for access to be restored at once.

Hiker, 78, dies on the Sauk Mountain trail

The Seattle Times reports that Peter Kalapaca, 78, of Edmonds was last seen shortly after noon on Sept. 17 near the top of the Sauk Mountain trail in Skagit County. The sheriff's office closed the trail and searched with ground teams, helicopters and police dogs, finding him on the evening of Sept. 18 in an area crews could not reach on foot; he was dead, his body was recovered by helicopter, and no cause of death was given. The switchbacking trail climbs 1,200 feet in just over two miles to a 5,500-foot summit, and besides him at least three other people have died on it in the past decade, all reported as falls.

KIRO 7 reports that at the Sept. 17 King County Board of Health meeting, staff from the county executive's federal team, Harborview Medical Center and Public Health – Seattle & King County set out what the federal HR1 law will mean locally: from Oct. 1 an estimated 4,000 lawfully present residents lose Medicaid eligibility, among them refugees, people granted asylum and survivors of human trafficking. Harborview receives more than $260 million a year in supplemental Medicaid payments and estimates $120 million in enrollment-related losses in the law's first year alone.

The Seattle Times reported Sept. 18 that AI-altered staging photos are flooding listing sites such as Zillow and Redfin, and that buyers and renters attending viewings are finding significant differences from what they saw online. The Northwest Multiple Listing Service requires brokers to disclose AI-altered photography; some alterations are obvious online and some are not. The paper is now asking readers to share their own experiences — seniors helping their children house-hunt, or renting for themselves, should walk the place in person and ask the broker outright whether the photos were altered.

Seattle parents awarded $40M as arbitrator finds Uber liable

The Seattle Times reported Sept. 18 that because a 23-year-old passenger's Uber stopped on the side of a Southern California expressway in 2023 and she was struck and killed by passing traffic after getting out, an arbitrator found Uber and the driver jointly liable and awarded her Seattle parents $40 million. Uber said it respects the arbitration process but disagrees that the company should be held responsible. The case went to arbitration rather than court because the app's terms of service, accepted at sign-up, require it — worth having your children read the screen before an older relative taps "agree."

Fourteen small fires in three days around Capitol Hill, one suspected arson

Capitol Hill Seattle reported Sept. 18 that Seattle Fire handled 14 dumpster, rubbish and brush fires across the East Precinct in three days, five of them overnight; over the preceding weekend there were at least twelve more around Capitol Hill, the Central District and First Hill. Just after 11 p.m. on Sept. 17 a car caught fire in the parking structure behind Harborview; the department treated it as possibly set deliberately and called in police, and the building's sprinklers put it out. Fire officials said there was no immediate sign the incidents were connected — residents of those blocks should roll bins back inside the yard at night rather than leaving them against the house.

Olympia district proposes closing three elementary schools

KING 5 reported on Sept. 17 that Olympia School District Superintendent Patrick Murphy has recommended closing and consolidating LP Brown, Madison and McKenny elementary schools, with the district down about 1,000 students from its 2019-20 peak. The district puts the saving at $3.1 million a year from the 2027-28 school year. Public hearings are set for October at each of the three schools with a board vote expected in November — families with grandchildren in local elementary schools should watch their own district's enrollment reports and hearing schedule.

华州高中毕业要求 州教育委员会定下方案
State Board of Education settles on new high school graduation rules
《西雅图时报》9月18号报道，华州教育委员会经过1年多讨论，定下修改高中毕业要求的方案：取消现行从九条「毕业路径」里选一条来证明够格毕业的做法，把代数二定为第三年数学的默认科目，公民课由半个学分扩成与世界史合并的一整年，并要求每所高中开设一学分的理财课。这套名为FutureReady的方案要等州议会2027年会期审议，就算成为法律，最早也要到2032届、也就是2028年秋天升高中的那批孩子才适用。现在读中学的孙辈多半赶不上，但理财课和代数二这两条，值得先记在心里。
The Seattle Times reported Sept. 18 that after more than a year of work the Washington State Board of Education has settled its proposal on graduation requirements: students would no longer have to complete one of nine "graduation pathways," Algebra II becomes the default third year of math, civics grows from half a credit to a full year combined with world history, and every school must offer a one-credit financial education class. The package, called FutureReady, goes to the Legislature in its 2027 session, and even if it becomes law the earliest it applies is the class of 2032 — students who start high school in fall 2028. Most grandchildren now in middle school will miss it, but the financial education and Algebra II items are worth noting.

The Bellevue Reporter said on Sept. 18 that the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife reopened Lake Washington to coho fishing through Oct. 31, two days after closing it. The open water is north of the 520 bridge and east of the Montlake Bridge, plus the stretch of the Sammamish River near Kenmore downstream of the 68th Ave. NE bridge. Check the department's page for rules and licence requirements before going; the report gives WDFW's number, 425-775-1311, for anything unclear.

The Mercer Island Reporter said on Sept. 18 that on the evening of Sept. 16 students, families, teachers and district leaders packed the Crest Learning Center for an open house celebrating the alternative high school, which runs small classes and project-based learning. With the district under budget pressure, Crest needs supplemental fundraising to keep going, and donations run through the Mercer Island Schools Foundation. The superintendent told the room that when Olympia does not come through, districts are left carrying it themselves through levies, bonds and the schools foundation.

Seattle weighs deep cuts to housing fees if builders break ground fast
据Capitol Hill Seattle9月18号报道，因市内停工的工地和空地越来越多、报建数量下降，西雅图市议员福斯特(Dionne Foster)提出一套名为Housing Accelerator的法案，把大型住宅楼可以选择缴给市府可负担房基金、以代替自建限租单位的那笔钱最多下调80%。条件是开发商要在规定期限前动工，并通过地基验收。法案9月18号送交委员会，还要经市议会表决才算数，眼下不影响已经在租房的人。
Capitol Hill Seattle reported Sept. 18 that with stalled sites and empty lots multiplying and permit filings falling, Councilmember Dionne Foster has proposed a "Housing Accelerator" package cutting by up to 80% the in-lieu payments large residential buildings make to the city's affordable housing fund instead of including rent-capped units on site. The cut would apply only if developers break ground and pass a foundation inspection by a set deadline. The bill went to committee on Sept. 18 and still needs a council vote; nothing changes for current renters.

美国文化一则American Customs
在美国进山，出门前留一张行程条是正经规矩。华州步道协会给的样表上要填：从哪个步道口进山、在哪个县、走哪条路线、备用方案、几点出发、几点打算回来，还有开的什么车、什么颜色、车牌号码。表的最后有一句现成的话：到某天某点还没有我的消息，就打911，报我逾期未归。
Leaving an itinerary before an American hike is the convention. The Washington Trails Association's own form asks for the trailhead name and county, the planned route, a backup plan, the time of departure and the expected time of return, plus the vehicle's make, model, colour and licence plate. It ends with a ready-made line: if you have not heard from me by this time on this day, call search and rescue at 911 and report me as overdue.
按华州军事部的说明，陆地搜救的责任在当地最高执法官，一般就是县警长，而出人出力的主要是登记在册的民间志愿者，全州5000多人。金县搜救协会在自家网页上写明：队伍百分之百是志愿者，由金县警长办公室调派，而且从不为服务收费。山野几千英亩，人手再多也得先划出范围，所以那张行程条不是客气，是搜救真正的起点。
Washington's Military Department says responsibility for land search and rescue rests with the local chief law enforcement officer, usually the county sheriff, and that the people who do the searching come primarily from registered citizen volunteers — more than 5,000 across the state. The King County Search and Rescue Association states on its own site that its units are 100% volunteer, are deployed by the King County Sheriff's Office, and never charge for their services. Thousands of acres of back country cannot be searched without first narrowing the ground, which is why the itinerary is not a courtesy but the actual starting point.
中国人出门讲「报个平安」，是同一个意思的两种说法。区别只在于：山里常常没信号，电话打不出去，所以要把话提前写在纸上。
"Let us know you got there safely" is the same instinct in Chinese. The only difference is that on a mountain the phone often has no signal, so the message has to be written down before you leave.
