U.S. and Denmark reach a security deal on Greenland
Greenland is a semi-autonomous Arctic island overseen by Denmark. Trump had repeatedly proposed buying it and earlier this year pressed Denmark with tariff threats, which he dropped in January. On Sept. 18 he announced a deal with Denmark giving the U.S. 'permanent control over security' in Greenland. CBS News reports that a State Department official said the U.S. gets permanent access and overflight rights, the military may add bases, and non-NATO countries are barred from building military bases there; the Danish and Greenlandic governments confirmed the deal, which is expected to be signed in New York on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
COMMUNITY IMPACTGreenland sits between North America and Europe, across the Arctic Ocean from Russia, and the U.S. has had a base there since the 1950s. Denmark's prime minister says the deal recognizes Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders' right to self-determination, and it still has to go through Denmark's parliament. In the near term it changes nothing in the daily life of local Chinese families.

Three more young men arrested in the deadly Chelan Hills fire
The Bellevue Reporter reports that on July 4, while Douglas County was under a burn ban, people fired Roman candles from a moving truck, igniting dry grass along U.S. Highway 97 and starting the Chelan Hills fire, which killed a 69-year-old man, injured six firefighters and destroyed more than 100 structures. The 18-year-old Kent man charged with lighting it pleaded not guilty on Sept. 17 and is held on $1 million bail; the same day, with help from the U.S. Marshals, police arrested three more men aged 18 and 19 from Tacoma and nearby towns.
COMMUNITY IMPACTWashington's dry summer and fall often bring burn bans that prohibit all fireworks. Under the charges filed here, people who set off fireworks can face felonies such as first-degree manslaughter and first-degree arson even if they meant no harm. Local Chinese families with teenage or young-adult children should remind them to stay away from fireworks during a burn ban, and never to fire them from a vehicle.

Washington and the FTC accuse Amway of misleading sellers; $225 million settlement
Amway is a Michigan direct-selling company whose independent sellers sell supplements and household goods to friends and family, and can also earn a cut of the sales of people they recruit. The Seattle Times reports that Washington and the Federal Trade Commission accused Amway and two training companies of luring people in with false earnings claims and then pressuring them to buy products they did not want and could not easily sell. On Sept. 17 the parties announced a settlement: Amway and its affiliates will pay $225 million, nearly all of it to sellers who joined through the two training companies and lost money. Amway admits no wrongdoing.
COMMUNITY IMPACTWashington joined the case because many of those harmed live around Spokane and Seattle, and training events were often held at the Tacoma Dome and the Lynnwood Convention Center. The FTC will announce how compensation works later; it says it never requires anyone to transfer money to get a refund, and anyone who asks for payment on that pretext is running a scam.

TV debate Oct. 8 on I-645, the measure to repeal the millionaires tax
Washington has enacted a 9.9% tax on individual or household income above $1 million, scheduled to start in 2028; Initiative 645 would repeal it and bar any state or local income tax, and voters decide in November. Households earning far less than $1 million would not pay it directly, but it affects how much the state has to spend, so it is worth hearing both sides before voting. KING 5 and The Seattle Times will host an hourlong debate at 8 p.m. on Oct. 8, live on KONG-TV and streamed online.

Man arrested after attempted arson at a Bellevue clinic
Early on Sept. 18, someone tried to set fire to the Planned Parenthood clinic in the 14,000 block of NE 8th Street in Bellevue. Bellevue police say the building was deliberately targeted, the suspect is in custody, and there is no longer a threat to the community or the clinic.
Mercer Island webinar teaches parents to guard children against online sextortion
Sextortion is when a scammer tricks a child online into sending intimate images, then threatens to publish them to extort money; on Sept. 15 the Mercer Island School District held a webinar on it with prosecutors from the U.S. Justice Department and the U.S. Attorney's Office for Western Washington. Figures cited there show reports of financially motivated sextortion rose from 10,731 in 2022 to 50,000 in 2025. Prosecutors urged parents and grandparents to watch for sudden requests for money, mood changes and secrecy about online activity, and to respond first with reassurance.

Seattle traffic safety bills clear committee, covering Chinatown-ID and other historic districts
On Sept. 17 the Seattle City Council's transportation committee passed the three-bill SAFER Streets package, including an amendment, approved 3-2, that lets the transportation department install traffic signs, signals and pavement markings in historic districts without first getting approval from the district boards. The districts include Pioneer Square, Pike Place Market, Ballard Avenue and the Chinatown-International District, which seniors who shop in Chinatown may want to follow. The Alliance for Pioneer Square opposed the amendment, a councilmember suggested exempting the Chinatown-International District, and it may change before the full council votes in mid-October.

American Customs
In the U.S., when a company cheats consumers, it is often not individuals who sue one by one but the Federal Trade Commission or a state attorney general who takes the case for everyone. After a win or settlement, the money is paid back to the people harmed, through what is called a refund program; how each case pays out is announced separately.
The logic is that one person cheated out of a few hundred dollars cannot afford a lawyer, so the government pools thousands of people's losses and pursues them together. Because the refunds are real, scammers impersonate the FTC too; the agency states plainly that it never threatens people and never asks anyone to transfer money to get a refund.
The Chinese saying is that every setback teaches a lesson, and people who get cheated often just swallow the loss. In the U.S. there is somewhere to seek redress, and money recovered this way comes with no fee. Seniors only need to remember one rule: a real refund gives you money and never asks for any.
