School board signs off, sealing Seattle Public Schools' new teachers' contract

西雅图公立学区和教师工会此前为加薪和特殊教育支持谈了30轮，开学前几个小时才谈成3年新合同，工会9月15日投票通过后，学区董事会9月16日也投票批准。合同3年加薪近10%，并增加校护士、心理师、社工和辅导员的名额。孙辈在西雅图公校读书的家庭，这3年不必再为罢工停课担心，但学区总监也坦言，学区仍有8700万美元赤字，这份合同只是争取1年时间来削减开支。

After 30 bargaining sessions over pay and special education support, Seattle Public Schools and the teachers' union reached a three-year contract hours before the first day of school; after the union ratified it on Sept. 15, the school board approved it on Sept. 16. It raises pay nearly 10% over three years and adds positions for school nurses, psychologists, social workers and counselors. Families with grandchildren in Seattle schools need not worry about a strike for three years, though the superintendent acknowledged an $87 million deficit and said the deal mainly buys the district a year to make cuts.

On the morning of Sept. 12, a man attacked a woman jogging along the Longacres Trail in Renton; another parent on the trail approached, the attacker was distracted, and the victim got away. Acting on a tip from the public, police arrested a suspect, who is held on $1 million bail for possible rape, assault and robbery charges that prosecutors are expected to file in the coming days. Seniors walking trails early in the day should go with someone and call police about anyone suspicious.

Stolen car slams into a Metro bus south of Kent, killing its driver

9月16日早上七点左右，一辆被盗的轿车在肯特(Kent)以南、奥本(Auburn)以北的南277街与83大道路口撞上一辆金县公交(King County Metro)。偷车司机伤重身亡，KING 5电视台报道车上三名乘客受伤，公交司机没有受伤。金县警长办公室表示这辆车很可能以高速撞上公交，事故路段封闭了好几个小时。

Around 7 a.m. on Sept. 16, a stolen car hit a King County Metro bus at South 277th Street and 83rd Avenue, south of Kent and north of Auburn. The driver of the stolen car died, KING 5 reports three bus riders were hurt, and the bus driver was not injured. The King County Sheriff's Office says the car likely hit the bus at high speed, and the road was closed for several hours.

A new federal Education Freedom Tax Credit starts in January: taxpayers in participating states can give up to $1,700 to approved nonprofits that fund K-12 scholarships and get a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit. Thirty-one states have opted in; Gov. Bob Ferguson says he will wait for the final rules, while the state's largest teachers union opposes it as a voucher by another name. In King County, students from households earning up to about $374,000 would qualify, so families with school-age grandchildren may want to watch the state's decision; even if Washington stays out, residents can still give to scholarship groups in other states.

Washington Supreme Court strikes down the natural gas initiative, I-2066

2024年华州选民以近52%的票数通过2066号公投案(I-2066)，要求保住家庭和企业用天然气的权利，挡住州里推广电热泵的政策。州最高法院9月17日以六比三裁定，该案把四件互不相干的事捆在一起，违反州宪法「一案一事」的规定，整案无效。裁决之后，普吉湾能源(Puget Sound Energy)可以继续推进减少天然气的转型计划，新建房屋也会继续被鼓励装电热泵而不是燃气炉。

In 2024 Washington voters passed Initiative 2066 with nearly 52% of the vote, aiming to protect homes' and businesses' access to natural gas and block state policies favoring electric heat pumps. On Sept. 17 the state Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that it bundled four unrelated subjects, violating the constitution's single-subject rule, and struck it down entirely. Puget Sound Energy can now continue its plans to move away from natural gas, and new homes will keep being steered toward heat pumps rather than gas furnaces.

Lam's Seafood Asian Market is a family-owned grocer that has sold Asian groceries and seafood in Seattle's Chinatown-International District for decades and also has a store near Westfield Southcenter in Tukwila. Owner David Tran says it will open a third store in Rainier Valley on a grocery site that has sat empty for eight years; the city helped with permits and contributed to repairs after a break-in, and Mayor Katie Wilson separately announced $1.7 million in programs to support grocers in underserved neighborhoods. Seniors in Southeast Seattle who travel far for Asian groceries may soon have a closer option.

Ahead of the Nov. 3 election, King County Elections Director Julie Wise met about 40 voters at the Wing Luke Museum in the Chinatown-International District on Sept. 16. Ballots go out Oct. 14 and drop boxes open Oct. 15; mailed ballots are best sent a week early, drop boxes take them until 8 p.m. on Election Day, and anyone without a ballot by Oct. 19 should contact the elections office. King County provides ballots and materials in Chinese; the number is 206-296-VOTE.
