August CPI rises 3.4% as inflation persists, Fed weighs rate move next week
The Labor Department reports that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.4% in August from a year earlier, matching July's pace and coming in right at market expectations; NPR reported on Sept. 11 that gas prices were among the biggest gainers in the increase, coming right on the heels of Brent crude passing $100 a barrel this week. The Federal Reserve meets next week, and the report has raised the odds of a rate hike -- one that would likely push mortgage, auto-loan and credit-card rates up with it.
COMMUNITY IMPACTThe CPI tracks the overall cost of everyday food, clothing and gas, so a 3.4% year-over-year rise means plenty of goods are still quietly getting more expensive; if rates climb along with it, mortgage, auto-loan and credit-card bills get heavier too. It's worth comparison-shopping on routine purchases and gas for now, and putting off big-ticket spending like a new car or a remodel until the rate picture is clearer.

67-year-old man dies after a dawn fight in Westlake Park
KING 5 reports that around 6:45 a.m. Thursday a passerby saw two men fighting in downtown Seattle's Westlake Park, one of them screaming for help before he stopped moving. Officers found the 67-year-old man without a pulse and gave lifesaving aid until Seattle Fire medics arrived; he was pronounced dead at the scene. A 39-year-old man was taken into custody nearby. A Real Time Crime Center camera recorded the incident and detectives are using the footage; police say they will put more uniformed officers on vehicle and bicycle patrol in the West Precinct, including downtown and Belltown.
COMMUNITY IMPACTWestlake Park sits beside downtown's main transit transfer point, on a route older Chinese residents often use for errands, transfers and medical appointments. The attack happened just after six in the morning, when the street is still empty, and police have added patrols. Seniors going downtown alone should travel in daylight hours, walk away from any street confrontation and call 911; anyone with information can call 206-233-5000.

Judge orders UW Medical Center worker released from immigration detention
The Seattle Times reports that Robert Sidhe, 43, worked as a doctor in Kenya, entered the U.S. legally in February 2023, filed an asylum application later that year that is still pending, and has worked as a patient care technician at UW Medical Center since last year. On Aug. 26 ICE stopped him as he drove home in Lynnwood, saying he had overstayed his visa. In detention his blood pressure spiked and he developed strokelike symptoms and was taken to hospital. On Sept. 11 a federal district judge ordered him released within six hours, citing the risk of a medical crisis in detention and the fact that he cares for a partner who uses a wheelchair.
COMMUNITY IMPACTICE's position is that a pending asylum application does not confer legal status and does not preclude enforcement against someone who has overstayed. The judge's order rested on the man's health risk and on his role caring for a disabled partner, not on his status. For immigrant families here, carrying identity documents and keeping a lawyer's number in the phone is worth more than an appeal after the fact.

Stolen semi rams patrol cars in Everett; five officers hospitalized
At 6:21 a.m. Thursday an employee reported a semi-truck stolen from a supermarket parking lot on Broadway in Everett; deputies spotted it heading south on the interstate before it turned into the Silver Lake neighborhood. Everett police tracked it with a drone, and investigators say the driver repeatedly and deliberately rammed occupied patrol cars, sending four city officers and one sheriff's deputy to hospital; prosecutors said they were treated for pain, bruising, abrasions and possible concussions, and one Everett officer was placed in a cervical collar. On Friday a Snohomish County District Court judge found probable cause for 16 offenses and set bail for the 33-year-old at $300,000.

Pioneer Square hotel workers end an 85-day walkout after a tentative agreement
Workers at the Embassy Suites by Hilton in Pioneer Square walked out over wages, year-round health coverage and a return to pre-pandemic staffing, and picketed the door for 85 days — the longest hotel strike in Washington history. On Friday Hilton announced a tentative labor agreement with UNITE HERE Local 8 and the workers ended the strike. Per The Seattle Times, housekeepers' starting pay will rise to $31.03 an hour, the highest for union housekeepers in the state.

McClatchy layoffs hit four Washington newspapers
McClatchy, a chain that owns 30 newspapers nationwide, cut jobs at dozens of its titles on Thursday, including four in Washington and one in Idaho. The newsroom union says a third of its members across the two states were laid off — 10 at the Idaho Statesman and seven across The News Tribune in Tacoma, The Olympian, The Bellingham Herald and The Tri-City Herald — mostly reporters covering city hall, state government, schools and investigations, effective Oct. 11. An internal memo said consumer revenue from local papers has fallen 41% over five years while expenses stayed flat.

King County Elections on how to make sure your November 3 ballot counts
Nov. 3 is the midterm election, and amid a run of news about mail ballots King County Elections says there is no federal proposal to end voting by mail or bring back full polling places; the real variable is postal delivery. In the August primary 70% of King County ballots came back through official drop boxes, and the county expects that share to be higher in November. Elections staff advise updating your voter registration online or by mail by Oct. 26 (in person right through election day) and signing up for ballot alerts that text or email you when your ballot is mailed, received and signature-checked.

State board would move world-language credits out of core graduation requirements
Washington's high school diploma requires 24 credits, two of them in a world language — Chinese and Japanese among them. Under current rules, for the Class of 2024 and after, those two credits may already be swapped for a category called the Personalized Pathway Requirement. What the State Board of Education approved on Sept. 10 is a legislative proposal that would write that flexibility into law and extend it across the whole graduation framework, aimed at the Class of 2031. It goes to the 2027-28 legislative session, so families counting on the school's Chinese class have a year to watch it.

A metallic green beetle is confirmed in Washington for the first time; ash trees at risk
The emerald ash borer is a half-inch metallic green beetle native to East Asia that burrows under ash bark and eats the tissue carrying water and nutrients, killing the tree from the inside; it has already killed more than 100 million ash trees in the U.S., with almost no infested tree surviving. In early August two people near Vancouver, Washington — in the state's southwest corner, across the river from Oregon — found an unfamiliar insect on their windshield and reported it; federal testing confirmed it on Aug. 19, the first confirmation in the state. It first appeared on the West Coast at Forest Grove, Oregon in 2022 and has been moving north along the I-5 corridor; anyone with an ash tree in the yard can watch for D-shaped exit holes in the bark and dieback at the crown.

American Customs
On a large American supermarket's shelf tag, next to the big total price, a small line in the corner usually gives the price per ounce or per pound. That is the unit price.
Manufacturers play with package sizes, a bigger box is not always cheaper, and a change of size makes two products impossible to compare. Most large American supermarkets print the price per unit alongside the total, putting the two packages on the same ruler so the shopper does not have to do arithmetic in the aisle. A handful of states and Washington, D.C. require it by law; Washington state does not, so here it is the retailer's own practice and it is occasionally missing.
Asking 'how much a jin' at a Chinese market is exactly the same idea — the unit price, only spoken aloud instead of printed. With diesel expensive and fresh food following it up, getting used to that small line shows which items shrank the package and which genuinely raised the price.
