Undocumented immigrants who cleaned up after 9/11 are still sick 25 years later
The 9/11 attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people, happened 25 years ago today. NPR reported on Sept. 11 that advocates estimate 2,000 to 6,000 of the workers who cleared the World Trade Center rubble were undocumented immigrants, many of them day laborers hired off street corners in Queens who worked in paper masks. The World Trade Center Health Program has recorded more than 57,000 related cancer cases. Some of those cleanup workers are now being treated for illness while fearing immigration enforcement, and avoid travelling to see family.
COMMUNITY IMPACTNPR reports that undocumented cleanup workers are entitled to workers' compensation and can also get help under the federal James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, but many are too afraid of exposing their status to apply. Local Chinese families with similar worries should first ask a social worker or lawyer they trust before deciding what to do.

Seattle business leaders ask the mayor for a public-safety plan within 100 days
The Seattle Times reports that 35 local business leaders sent a joint letter on Sept. 10 to Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson and the City Council; signers include the heads of Microsoft, Starbucks and Costco and former Gov. Chris Gregoire. The letter asks the city to produce a public-safety action plan within 100 days: more foot and bicycle patrols in Little Saigon in the Chinatown International District, a recommitment to a seven-minute response target for the most urgent 911 calls, and a ban on encampments within 250 feet of parks, playgrounds and schools. The mayor said in a statement that many of the requests are already underway.
COMMUNITY IMPACTLittle Saigon borders Chinatown and is where many Chinese seniors shop, see herbal doctors and run errands, so added patrols there would help them first. Figures cited in the letter show that in the first three months of this year only half of the most urgent 911 calls got an officer on scene within seven minutes, and the 2025 average was about ten minutes; a senior in trouble should call 911 at once and give the street name and number first.

Washington individual health premiums to rise 22.2% on average next year
Washington Insurance Commissioner Patty Kuderer on Sept. 9 approved an average 22.2% increase for 2027 individual health plans sold through the state exchange, the largest in almost a decade and the third straight year of double-digit increases. About 250,000 people are covered by these plans, mainly the self-employed, workers whose employers offer no insurance, and people who retired before 65 and are not yet eligible for Medicare. Increases vary by insurer, from an average of 30.5% at the highest to 6.7% at the lowest.
COMMUNITY IMPACTOne cause is that the enhanced federal premium tax credits were not renewed; they had saved enrollees an average of $1,330 a year, and without them healthier people drop coverage, leaving a costlier pool. In local Chinese families, seniors who retired before 65 and adult children who run their own businesses are hit hardest, and they should compare every insurer's price again at renewal.

City-commissioned report: Seattle's economy is not in decline but is in danger
A 127-page economic report commissioned by the city of Seattle was released on Sept. 9 and concludes the city's economy is not in decline but is in danger: three-quarters of the payroll tax on large employers comes from ten companies, and one large company moving 10,000 workers out would cost the city about $50 million a year. The report warns that Seattle's only real rival for big employers is the Eastside, anchored by the separately governed city of Bellevue. Mayor Wilson signed an executive order the same day creating a task force of business, labor and community leaders and directing city departments to find ways to simplify the permitting businesses need to open, operate and expand -- specifics are still to come.

Seattle to add 24/7 speed cameras on four stretches of road in the second half of next year
The Seattle Department of Transportation announced on Sept. 9 that the first four 24/7 speed cameras will go on two stretches of Rainier Ave S, on E Marginal Way S and on Sand Point Way NE, all roads with heavy speeding and serious crashes, where 15% of drivers go 10+ mph over the limit. Seniors who drive, or drive grandchildren, should keep to the limit on these stretches. The cameras are expected to switch on in the second half of 2027, with signs posted at least 30 days ahead and only warnings issued for the first 30 days.

More than 300 Shoreline School District staff could strike Monday

Shoreline School District paraeducators, technical and health staff, security guards and secretaries have been negotiating a contract for higher pay since April, and their union voted on Sept. 9 to strike. If there is no deal by 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, more than 300 employees will strike from Monday, Sept. 14; the union says it is open to talks through the weekend.
Pioneer Square hotel strike becomes Washington's longest as the two sides return to talks
Workers at the Hilton-owned Embassy Suites in Pioneer Square want raises, year-round health coverage and pre-pandemic staffing levels, and most of the roughly 115 employees have been on strike since June 18, now the longest hotel strike in Washington history. On Sept. 10 their union returned to the bargaining table with the company; the union says whether the strike continues depends on the company's offer and would need a worker vote. The hotel is at 255 S. King St., not far from Chinatown, so picket lines may be visible nearby.

Teen mural apprentices paint two new murals, one of which carries a line in Chinese
Urban ArtWorks' summer Mural Apprentice Program had young artists create two new murals, one at Southwest Youth and Family Services headquarters in North Delridge and one at a community learning space in White Center. The Delridge mural shows people and flowers climbing a mountain path, with encouraging messages in many languages at the top, including "Trust the Process" in Mandarin as well as Khmer, Spanish and Somali. Participants received a stipend, and the program also ran two cohorts in Shoreline this year.

Sea-Tac Airport's free security-line reservation service ends in late November
SEA Spot Saver, the free service Seattle-Tacoma International Airport launched in 2021 to let travellers book a security-checkpoint time and skip long lines, will end after Nov. 29, and existing reservations through that date stay valid. An airport spokesperson says about half of those who sign up never use it, and since the new Checkpoint 1 and the redesigned Checkpoint 5 opened, 94% of travellers get through security in 20 minutes or less. Seniors travelling around Thanksgiving can check real-time wait times at each checkpoint on portseattle.org before leaving home.

West Seattle RV and tiny-house site breaks ground, set to open in mid-November
To get long-parked RVs off the streets and their occupants into permanent housing, the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) is building Glassyard Commons on state transportation land at 7200 2nd SW in West Seattle, with 72 RV spaces and 20 tiny houses; the ceremonial groundbreaking was Sept. 10. LIHI has a $3.3 million-a-year contract to run the site and will give priority to RV residents from District 1, and once occupants move into permanent housing their RVs will be destroyed rather than return to the street. The site is expected to open in mid-November, with a community advisory committee meeting monthly online that neighbours can join.

American Customs
Sept. 11 is Patriot Day in the US: flags at half-staff and a moment of silence, but no day off
Congress passed a resolution in 2001 making Sept. 11 Patriot Day; each year the president issues a proclamation ordering flags to half-staff and calling for a moment of silence for the victims. In 2009 Congress made it a National Day of Service and Remembrance, with federal grants for community groups to organize service and remembrance activities. It is not a federal holiday: one historian notes the bar for a new federal holiday is high, with costs and business disruption, and that the victims simply went to work rather than sacrificing for their country, unlike the patriotic occasions federal holidays celebrate. Another scholar worries that a day off would make people forget what the day means.
Qingming in China is a day off when families sweep graves together and remember. On 9/11 Americans go to work and school as usual and remember by lowering flags, keeping silence and volunteering. One looks back, the other acts forward; the feeling behind them is the same.
