The Associated Press reports that after trade talks between the US and Canada collapsed on Aug. 21, Canada's counter-tariffs on US goods took effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, covering roughly $20 billion in goods — about 6% of the $333.6 billion the US exports to Canada each year. The rates run at 15%, 25% or 50% depending on the category, and cover steel, aluminium, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics and farm equipment. Canada's industry minister, Mélanie Joly, said she is convinced Canada will win this trade war. President Trump posted on social media on Monday that Bombardier may no longer sell in the United States unless it builds its aircraft here.

KIRO Newsradio reports that on Labor Day afternoon a large tree snapped clean off at the base of its thick trunk in the upper parking lot of Seahurst Park in Burien, coming down on six sedans and SUVs. No one was in the vehicles and no one was hurt; a red Honda SUV took the trunk squarely on its hood. Park staff arrived after the reports came in, cut the trunk apart with chainsaws and brought in a front loader to lift the heavy limbs off the cars. The tree still carried plenty of green foliage and did not look dead; why it broke has not been determined.

Relatives say two U.S. Forest Service rangers came to the site over a garbage problem, gave a verbal warning, then asked for and photographed several adults' IDs; close to midnight the same day, federal immigration agents returned to the campsite with the rangers and arrested five men. Children aged one to 14 were at the site. The five are being held at the immigration detention centre in Tacoma. The Forest Service had not responded by the time the story was published.
