US and Iran trade fire again after a month; oil pushes past $95

It started at the weekend, when US forces struck Iranian rocket launchers on an island in the Strait of Hormuz, saying Iran meant to use them to fire mines into the waterway; Iran then fired missiles at American bases in Jordan, all of which were intercepted. The Associated Press reports that on September 1 US forces again struck Iranian air-defence sites, radar and maritime assets; Iran says one strike hit a wedding at a house in Kuhestak, killing at least five and wounding 68. Early on September 2 Iran fired drones and missiles toward Kuwait, Bahrain and the UAE, most of them intercepted. Since this round of fighting resumed, Brent crude has risen above $95 a barrel.

GeekWire reported on September 1 that last week, in Kirkland's Moss Bay neighbourhood, a resident heard loud banging inside the house and called 911 to report a break-in. Officers arrived expecting a burglar and found a bobcat sitting at the top of the staircase. Rather than walking in blind, they flew an unmanned aircraft inside to watch the animal, corralled it into an isolated room and waited for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The bobcat was sedated and released near Forbes Creek, close to where it was found. Police believe it climbed a tree and jumped through an open window, possibly following the resident's own cat, which was later found unharmed.

The two sides had spent the whole summer bargaining over pay, class-size caps and special education programmes (KIRO Radio, September 1); the old contract expired on August 31. According to the district notice carried by the West Seattle Blog, Seattle Public Schools and the Seattle Education Association reached a tentative contract late on September 1. The 2026-27 school year begins as scheduled on September 2, with grades 1-12 starting today and preschool and kindergarten on September 8. The tentative deal still has to be ratified by a vote of the union membership and of the school board.

The Seattle Times reported on September 1 that Maverick Washington is closing two Tukwila cardrooms; the layoff notice filed with the state lists 238 workers affected, with an expected termination date of November 1. The jobs include table-game floor supervisors, bartenders, dishwashers and line cooks — trades many local immigrants work in — and the company says it is looking for a buyer for the two sites. If someone in your family works there, note November 1 and file the unemployment claim with the state Employment Security Department in the week they finish, not before.

White jasmine rice recall widens to include Washington
据《西北亚洲周报》8月31号报道，Lundberg 的两磅装白茉莉香米因为可能混进异物被召回；KIRO7 9月1号引联邦食品药监局说，召回范围已经扩大到包括华州在内的十几个州。米是华人家里天天要下锅的东西，这条比大多数召回都贴身。买过这个牌子白茉莉香米的，把包装上的批号跟店里或厂家的召回公告对一对，对不上再下锅，别凭印象。
Northwest Asian Weekly reported on August 31 that Lundberg's two-pound bag of white jasmine rice has been recalled over possible foreign material; KIRO 7 reported on September 1 that the FDA has widened the recall to a dozen-odd states including Washington. Rice goes into the pot every day in a Chinese household, so this one lands closer to home than most recalls. If you bought that brand of white jasmine rice, check the lot code on the bag against the store's or the maker's recall notice before cooking it.

July's shooting at the Bite of Seattle left three dead and four wounded, and the city was criticised afterwards for how slowly it told the public. KIRO Radio reported on September 2 that Mayor Wilson has changed the rule: in any major incident the police department must brief the media within one hour when it is safe and possible to do so, and she and the interim chief will stay in direct contact throughout. The practical upshot: after any incident there should be an official account within the hour, so don't trust the screenshots flying round the group chat first.

KING 5 reported on August 31 that a 22-year-old Federal Way man has been charged with second-degree manslaughter; investigators say his four-month-old was swaddled, placed face down and left alone for 15 to 30 minutes. This matters most to grandparents helping with a baby: infants under one should sleep on their backs, with no thick quilt, pillow or plush toy in the crib. Stay in the room while the baby sleeps, and however warm the swaddle, it must never come over the nose and mouth.

KING 5 reported on August 31 that Norman Rockwell Elementary in Redmond has moved into a new $80 million building: two storeys, plenty of daylight, classrooms that open to the outdoors and more room for students. It is one of several district construction projects, part of a run of Eastside elementary rebuilds. If you have a child at an Eastside elementary, walk the new drop-off route in the first few days — that first week is when the queue is worst.

Edmonds sits north of Seattle beside the ferry dock, and the theatre is within walking distance of downtown, so it is an easy stop on a weekend ferry trip.

The University of Washington is rewriting its Student Conduct Code; a university spokesperson says the aim is transparency, fairness and accountability and that the changes are not connected to protests. The Seattle Times reported on August 31 that faculty fear the new rules would let a student present at a protest be held responsible for property damage they did not cause, with covering one's face treated as an aggravating factor; the revisions were filed with the state on July 20 and Faculty Senate members say they only learned of them last week. If your child is at UW, have them read the draft on the university's site and learn which acts go on their record.

Survey: nine in ten registered AAPI voters plan to vote in November

Northwest Asian Weekly reported on September 1 on a survey finding that nine in ten registered Asian American and Pacific Islander voters say they plan to vote in the November midterms. AAPI voters are one of the fastest-growing electorates in the country, and numbers are what make a city council or a school board take a community's concerns seriously. Washington votes entirely by mail and ballots arrive in mid-October, so if you have moved, update your registration address with King County Elections first or the ballot goes to the old house.

美国文化一则American Customs
在美国，野生动物闯进住宅不归住户自己处理，也不归警察最终处理，而是交给州里的鱼类与野生动物部门；抓到之后一般是麻醉、检查，然后在离发现地不远的野外放归，而不是运到几十英里外，更不是打死。
In the US, a wild animal inside a home is not the householder's problem to solve, and not ultimately the police's either: it goes to the state fish and wildlife department. The animal is usually sedated, checked, and released into open country close to where it was found — not trucked dozens of miles away, and not killed.
华州法律把野生动物列为州的公共财产，私人不得捕杀，也不得私自饲养，所以处置权在州里，不在住户手上。就近放归的道理也简单：动物各有各的地盘，挪得太远，等于把它放进别的动物的地界，未必活得下来。
Washington law makes wildlife the public property of the state: a private person may neither kill nor keep it, so the decision rests with the state rather than with the householder. Releasing an animal close by follows from the same practical point — animals hold territory, and one dropped far from home may not survive in another animal's ground.
中国人讲放生，图的是心里那一份不忍；美国这套讲的是「哪儿来的回哪儿去」，图的是那只动物真能活下来。两边的出发点其实是同一个——别伤它；差别只在，一边靠心意，一边靠一套写进法律的做法。想明白这层，家里真进了动物，反而不慌了。
Chinese tradition has 放生, releasing a captive creature, and what it serves is the softness in the person doing it. The American practice is 'back where it came from', and what it serves is the animal actually surviving. The starting point is the same — do not harm it — and the difference is only that one runs on feeling and the other on a written procedure. Understanding that takes the panic out of finding an animal in the house.
