Grand Canyon flash flood: two dead, 82 evacuated
8月29号星期六下午，大峡谷国家公园谷底的天使溪一带突发山洪。到8月31号晚上，已确认两人遇难、一人下落不明；原先按入园许可推算失联的15人，除一人外都已联系上，至少82人被撤出谷底。气象局说，短短半个钟头下了半英寸到一英寸的雨，大半当场变成地面上的径流。跨溪的人行桥几乎全毁，园内那条输水管道约40%被毁、目前停用。
On the afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 29, a flash flood tore through the Bright Angel Creek area at the bottom of Grand Canyon National Park. As of Monday evening two people were confirmed dead and one was still missing; of the roughly 15 initially unaccounted for under the park's permit system, all but one have been reached, and at least 82 people were evacuated from the inner canyon. The Weather Service said half an inch to an inch of rain fell in just half an hour and most of it ran off instantly. Nearly all the footbridges over the creek were destroyed, and about 40% of the park's Transcanyon Waterline is destroyed and out of service.

WA state workers walk out at more than 100 worksites
据《西雅图时报》报道，8月31号星期一中午，华州州府雇员工会的会员因不满州政府在合同谈判里给出的加薪幅度，在全州100多处工点走出办公楼抗议。这个工会代表5万多名公职人员。奥林匹亚(Olympia)的州府办公室、华盛顿大学、西雅图的港景医院都有人参加。工会强调这不是罢工，参加的人用的是休息时间或年假。州长办公室回应说，州长敬重州府雇员，但州里正面临预算困难。
The Seattle Times reports that at midday on Monday, Aug. 31, members of the Washington Federation of State Employees walked out at more than 100 worksites across the state, saying the pay raises offered in contract talks are inadequate. The union represents more than 50,000 public employees. Participants gathered at state offices in Olympia, at the University of Washington and at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The union stressed this was not a strike: workers used scheduled breaks or vacation time. The governor's office said he respects state workers but the state faces real budget problems.

Amazon accused of secretly inflating sellers' ad prices
8月31号，联邦贸易委员会连同华州总检察长布朗和另外21个州的总检察长，在西雅图的联邦地区法院起诉亚马逊。起诉书说，从2018年底开始，亚马逊在网站的广告竞价里加进了自己设的价钱，向大约120万家广告客户多收了合计200亿美元。亚马逊否认，说自己的定价没有伤害卖家和买家，对方误解了广告竞价是怎么运作的。
On Aug. 31 the Federal Trade Commission, joined by Washington Attorney General Nick Brown and the attorneys general of 21 other states, sued Amazon in federal district court in Seattle. The complaint says that from late 2018 Amazon inserted prices of its own into the ad auctions on its site, overcharging roughly 1.2 million advertising customers a total of $20 billion. Amazon denies it, saying its pricing has not harmed sellers or shoppers and that the claims misunderstand how the auctions work.

In a state filing Amazon reported laying off 121 Washington employees in July across about a dozen listed sites. One Bellevue office was hit hardest with 53; Seattle had 35, the Sumner warehouse 32, and one more person was working remotely in Washington. Termination dates fall between Oct. 1 and Oct. 27, and the company says this is not a large-scale round of cuts. Washington tightened its layoff-notice rules a year ago, so these lists are now public; families with someone in tech can watch the state Employment Security Department's postings.

The brokerage Compass sued Washington's listing service last April over whether agents may show a home to clients before it is formally listed. The two settled on Aug. 31, and from Sept. 4 a new status lets sellers take up to 21 days of preparation, during which price changes and days-on-market are not shown publicly. Elders selling a home should ask their agent whether to use it, because it changes the 'days on market' buyers see.

Seattle now has 35 school-zone speed cameras

With school back in session Seattle now has 35 school-zone speed cameras, which switch on when the beacons flash in a 20 mph zone. Fines double inside a school zone and cannot be waived or reduced — 10 mph over costs $136 normally and $272 in a school zone. Tacoma has added four cameras and Everett one near an elementary school, so the simplest move on the grandchildren's run is to slow down.

Seattle Asian Art Museum shows three generations of Kondō family ceramics
西雅图亚洲艺术博物馆正在办日本近藤家三代人的陶艺展，展名叫《近藤家：泥土里的说书人》。祖父近藤悠31977年被日本定为「人间国宝」，孙子近藤高弘是这一脉现在还在世的唯一一位，最近来过西雅图。展览一直办到2027年1月3号，博物馆在志愿者公园里，天冷了也是个逛半天的好去处。
The Seattle Asian Art Museum is showing three generations of the Japanese Kondō family's ceramics in an exhibition called The Kondō Family: Storytellers in Clay. The grandfather, Kondō Yūzō, was named a Living National Treasure in 1977, and his grandson Kondō Takahiro, the only living representative of the line, visited Seattle recently. The show runs until Jan. 3, 2027, at the museum in Volunteer Park — a good half-day out once the weather turns.

Pike Place Market limits cars only Friday to Sunday this winter

The Pike Place Market Historical Commission voted unanimously last week on this winter's vehicle plan: from October through next March, cars will be restricted only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. On other days traffic runs as usual, with signs asking drivers to yield to pedestrians. A city survey this year found 98% support for keeping the barriers, so the change has drawn criticism; anyone visiting with elders or children should watch for cars on weekdays.

Snoqualmie hospital intersection is finally getting a stoplight
斯诺夸尔米(Snoqualmie)山谷医院的院区多年来只有一个公共出入口，救护车常被路口排队的车挡在外头，现在这个路口终于要装红绿灯了。市里8月24号批了夜间施工许可，预计9月第二周动工，周日到周四晚上九点到清晨五点施工，约31个晚上。新灯会和附近路口联动，医院那栋新楼2027年春天开门，里面有门诊药房和康复中心。
The Snoqualmie Valley Health campus has had only one public way in and out for years, and ambulances are sometimes stuck behind cars queued at that intersection; it is finally getting a stoplight. The city approved a night-work permit on Aug. 24, construction is expected to start in the second week of September, running Sunday to Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for about 31 nights. The new signal will be timed with the nearby interchange, and the hospital's new building opens in spring 2027 with an outpatient pharmacy and a rehabilitation centre.

美国的「裁员预告」——公司要裁人，得先报给州里，名单还公开
The American layoff notice: a company must report cuts to the state, and the list is public
美国有一条叫「工人调整与再培训预告」的法，公司裁到一定人数，要提前书面报给州里，员工也要提前知道。华州1年前把这条收紧了，报备的次数更密，所以《西雅图时报》才能一条一条地写出来。背后的想法是：丢工作是一件公共的事，不只是公司和员工两个人的事——提前知道，人才有时间找下家、算保险、想房贷。
The U.S. has a law called the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act: past a certain size, a company must file written notice of layoffs with the state, and workers must be told in advance. Washington tightened its version a year ago so filings come more often, which is why the Seattle Times can report them one by one. The idea behind it is that losing a job is a public matter, not just a private one between employer and employee — advance notice buys people time to look, to work out insurance, to plan the mortgage.
咱们那边讲究「好聚好散」，裁员多半是关起门来谈，谈妥了才通知别人。美国是反过来，先摆到明面上，再谈条件。两种做法都想护住人的体面，只是一个靠人情、一个靠白纸黑字。家里有人在公司上班的，知道有这么一张公开名单，心里就多一分底。
Back home the value is a clean parting: layoffs are settled behind closed doors and announced once agreed. The American way is the reverse — put it on the record first, then negotiate the terms. Both are trying to protect a person's dignity, one through relationships and one through black and white. Knowing that public list exists gives a family with someone in the workforce a little more footing.
