The Associated Press reported that on Aug. 30 US forces struck Iranian Revolutionary Guard rocket launchers near Larak island in the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command spokesman Tim Hawkins said the reason was that the Guard was observed preparing to launch sea mines into the strait; Guard spokesman Gen. Hossein Mohebi called it a fatal mistake, said the other side would pay militarily and economically, and acknowledged casualties on his own side. It was the first US military action in a month and broke the preceding lull. On Aug. 31 Brent crude rose 3.4% to $91.10 a barrel.

Posing as a pro player on dating apps, pair took $1.3M from 26 people
据西雅图KIRO78月29号报道，联邦检察官指控35岁的洛夫(Daejon Love)和一名18岁的同伙：从2022年2月起，洛夫在交友软件上结识女性，自称是旧金山四九人(49ers)的职业球员，同伙则冒充他的理财顾问，两人拿不存在的投资项目和三方视频里的假收益截图取信，从至少26位受害人手里拿走约130万美元，受害人分布在华州、俄勒冈、爱达荷和加州。两人8月24号被捕，案子在波特兰以刑事诉状起诉，8月27号首次出庭，目前羁押在爱达荷州博伊西。
KIRO 7 reported on Aug. 29 that federal prosecutors have accused Daejon Love, 35, and an 18-year-old accomplice: from February 2022 Love met women on dating apps, claimed to be a San Francisco 49ers player while the accomplice posed as his financial adviser, and the pair used non-existent investments and faked gains shown on three-way video calls to take about $1.3 million from at least 26 victims in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California. Both were arrested on Aug. 24, charged by criminal complaint in Portland, made a first court appearance on Aug. 27 and are in federal custody in Boise, Idaho.

The Seattle Times reported on Aug. 30 that Kemper Development Co., owned by the Freeman family, announced on Aug. 28 that it will look for a buyer for the Bellevue Collection in downtown Bellevue — Bellevue Square, Bellevue Place and Lincoln Square North and South — 5.5 million square feet with more than 200 shops, over 50 restaurants and entertainment venues, 1,100 hotel rooms and 12,500 parking spaces. The company said the step was prompted by the retirement last year of the family member who led it, that a broker has not yet been chosen, and that operations and this year's events continue as scheduled.

A daycare inside a Seattle senior community, under one roof

Marlene Peters, 85, a retired teacher, has been reading to the children for five years while a ring of older neighbours listens in; a Catholic care community in West Seattle has run a similar programme for 35 years with room for 103 children. Only about a dozen Washington facilities combine long-term care and childcare, because they must clear two sets of licensing rules.

A King County resident says she heard her door handle rattle around 11 p.m.; her doorbell camera showed a person in a delivery vest put down two bags of groceries and immediately try the front door. She contacted Amazon the same day, and the company called back several times saying it was investigating internally and that the driver may have been sent by a subcontractor. She has stopped taking late-night deliveries and now locks the door before bed as a fixed habit — doorbell footage is the only evidence that settles a case like this.

皮尔斯县帕克兰(Parkland)8月28号下午近两点起了一场草火，火头往住宅区推，县警对108街南、111街南到谢里丹大道南一带发出立刻撤离的通知。下午两点50左右火被围住，烧毁两座附属棚屋和几辆废弃车，无人受伤，撤离通知随即取消，居民当天就回了家。华州火季还没走完，屋边一米内别堆干柴干草、车别停在没割的高草上，这两条最省事也最管用。
A brush fire started in Parkland, Pierce County, just before 2 p.m. on Aug. 28 and pushed toward homes, prompting the sheriff's office to tell people bounded by 108th Street South, 111th Street South and Sheridan Avenue South to leave immediately. It was contained by about 2:50 p.m., destroying two outbuildings and several abandoned cars with no injuries, and the evacuation notice was lifted so residents returned the same day. Washington's fire season is not over: keep dry wood and grass a metre clear of the house and do not park on tall uncut grass — the two cheapest and most effective habits.

Regional express buses overhauled Aug. 29; six routes cut entirely
Sound Transit 的快线巴士8月29号大改，十几条线调整，515、550（贝尔维尤(Bellevue)到西雅图）、554（伊萨夸(Issaquah)到西雅图）、570夜班、580和586这六条整条取消，其中跟东区最相关的是550和554，其余几条在斯诺霍米什县和皮尔斯县。机构说这是配合1年半来陆续通车到联邦道(Federal Way)、跨华盛顿湖和到雷德蒙(Redmond)市中心的轻轨，目前每天约15万人次坐轻轨，远超原来那些巴士的运量。同时新增雷德蒙到西雅图、莱克伍德到西雅图两条夜班巴士，站台上贴有告示，也可以直接找站里的工作人员问替代路线。
Sound Transit's express bus network was overhauled on Aug. 29, changing more than a dozen routes and eliminating six entirely: 515, 550 (Bellevue-Seattle), 554 (Issaquah-Seattle), the 570 night bus, 580 and 586. 美国文化一则American Customs
美国的家族生意到了交班这一关，卖掉往往不算失败，而是一种体面的收尾。
In America, selling a family business at the succession stage is often read not as failure but as a dignified ending.
这一条的由头，是坎珀开发公司自己给的理由：家族里主事的老先生去年退休，于是开始找买家。美国把公司和家庭当成两件事：公司是资产，家庭是关系。老一辈退休时，如果下一代志不在此，硬塞给他们两头受累；卖给专业机构、把钱换成信托、基金会和捐赠，生意本身继续转，子女各走各的路。所以这里家族企业换东家是常事，社区新闻会认真报道，却很少有人说「败家」——这一层是本节目的文化解释，不是报道里的话。
The occasion for this is the reason Kemper Development gave itself: the family member who led it retired last year, so the family is looking for a buyer. America treats the company and the family as two separate things: the company is an asset, the family is a set of relationships. When elders retire and the next generation's heart is elsewhere, forcing the business on them harms both; selling to institutional owners and turning the proceeds into trusts, foundations and giving keeps the business running while the children take their own paths. A family firm changing hands is ordinary here — reported carefully, rarely called squandering the estate. That reading is this programme's cultural commentary, not a claim in the article.
中国人讲「守业」，守的其实是一家人的关系和名声；美国人讲「交易」，护的也是同一件东西，只是换了个工具。两边都在回答同一个问题：老人退下来以后，这个家怎么继续在一起。听懂这一层，再看自家孩子不愿接店铺，就没那么伤心了。
Chinese families speak of guarding the estate; what they are really guarding is the family's relationships and name. Americans speak of a transaction, and they are protecting the same thing with a different tool. Both are answering one question: after the elders step back, how does this family stay together? Seeing that layer makes a child's refusal to take over the shop much less painful.

You will hear this word when labour talks stall, when neighbours fall out over a fence, or when you and an insurer cannot agree. The school district and the teachers' union have just brought one in; a mediator does not rule on who is right, only gets both sides back to the table.
