With inflation still high, the Fed chair signals rate hikes may be needed
According to the Associated Press, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh said at the Fed's annual conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Aug. 28 that inflation is still too high and that the central bank may need to raise interest rates in the coming months. The Fed's preferred inflation gauge stood at 3.7% in July against a 2% target, and the short-term rate is currently about 3.6%. After the speech the two-year Treasury yield rose from 4.22% to 4.30%, and market bets on a hike at the Sept. 15-16 meeting went from about one-third to roughly even.
COMMUNITY IMPACTVariable-rate credit cards and money borrowed against a house follow this short-term rate and get more expensive the same month if the Fed raises; CD and money-market yields drift up. Mortgages follow long-term rates, and this time the 10- and 30-year yields were mostly flat. Households here with a CD coming due may want to compare the rate before and after it matures.

Tank was ruled unfit ten months before it failed; eleven died at the Longview mill
The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) released an interim report on August 28 laying out the sequence. In July 2025 an inspection contractor told the Nippon Dynawave mill in Longview that the shell of a tank holding corrosive chemicals had thinned significantly and was “not fit for continued service” unless repaired, with a high likelihood of failure. Two further inspections through February of this year said the same thing — three times in all. The mill did no internal inspection, made no repair and did not depressurise the tank. On May 26 this year it failed, spilling 900,000 gallons of corrosive chemicals and killing eleven workers.
COMMUNITY IMPACTLongview is more than two hours south of Seattle, so this did not happen on our doorstep. But the thread that matters in the report — a hazard written down three times and acted on by nobody — travels to any workplace. Many first-generation immigrants in our community work in food processing, warehouses, restaurant kitchens and care homes, are not comfortable in English, and when something looks wrong tend to put up with it rather than risk the job. Washington's Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) takes safety complaints and interpretation can be requested; the law also forbids an employer from retaliating against a worker for reporting a safety problem.

The fight is over special-education staffing and class sizes; Seattle talks break down three days before school
The Seattle Times reported on Aug. 28 that the Seattle Education Association and Seattle Public Schools have been bargaining a new contract since late June, stuck on special-education staffing ratios, class sizes and pay; on the night of Aug. 26 the union voted 91.2% to authorize a strike, and the district's first day is Sept. 2, when about 50,000 students are due back. West Seattle Blog reported in the early hours of Aug. 30 that the union had posted that the district "walked away from the table." The union says that without a tentative agreement by the end of Sept. 1, classes stop the next day.
COMMUNITY IMPACTThe union covers about 6,000 district employees, so a walkout pushes the whole district's start date back — the 2022 strike delayed it by five days. Families here with grandchildren in Seattle Public Schools should line up daytime care and rides in advance, and follow the district's daily updates starting Monday.
