斯诺霍米什郡缉毒专案组8月19号搜查博塞尔(Bothell)207th Place Southeast的一处住宅，起获芬太尼、冰毒、可卡因等毒品，八支枪，以及前后共约14.7万美元现金。一名42岁男子由联邦法警拘捕，案子还在查。这一带就在东区北缘，家里若有年轻人往来的朋友来路不明，值得多问一句。

The Snohomish Regional Drug Task Force searched a house on 207th Place Southeast in Bothell on Aug. 19, seizing fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine and other drugs, eight firearms and about $147,000 in cash in total. A 42-year-old man was arrested by U.S. Marshals and the investigation continues. This is the northern edge of the Eastside, so if a young person at home has friends nobody can place, it is worth one extra question.

Panda Fest opens at Seattle Center this weekend with three layers of screening

亚洲美食文化节「熊猫节」8月28号到30号在西雅图中心的费舍尔展馆举行。主办方说，因为7月26号「西雅图美食节」发生枪击、三死四伤，今年加了三层安检：指定入口装金属探测门，另有开包检查和手持探测棒，西雅图警方也会派出大量制服警力。想去的长者最好轻装少带包，进场前跟家人约好走散时的集合点。

Panda Fest, an Asian food and culture festival, runs Aug. 28-30 at Fisher Pavilion in Seattle Center. Organizers say that after the July 26 shooting at the Bite of Seattle killed three and injured four, this year adds three layers of screening: metal detection at designated entrances, bag checks and handheld wands, with a heavy uniformed Seattle police presence. Seniors going should travel light and agree on a meeting point with family before going in.

《西雅图时报》8月28号梳理，因班额、特教人手和工资谈不拢，普吉湾多个学区今年也在和教师工会僵着：埃弗雷特(Everett)工会星期二凌晨一点43分谈成，覆盖博塞尔(Bothell)、肯莫尔(Kenmore)、伍丁维尔(Woodinville)的北岸(Northshore)学区星期四晚通过新合同。塔克韦拉(Tukwila)星期五下午拿到临时协议，下星期一交会员表决；普亚勒普(Puyallup)还在谈，图姆沃特(Tumwater)的助教工会已授权罢工。孙辈在这几个学区上学的，开学日期请以学区通知为准。

The Seattle Times reported on Aug. 28 that, stuck on class sizes, special-education staffing and pay, several Puget Sound districts were also locked in talks with their teacher unions: Everett's union settled at 1:43 a.m. Tuesday, and Northshore — covering Bothell, Kenmore and Woodinville — approved new contracts on Thursday night. Tukwila reached a tentative agreement on Friday afternoon, going to members on Monday, while Puyallup was still bargaining and Tumwater's paraeducators had authorized a strike. If a grandchild attends one of these districts, take the start date from the district's own notice.

Judge halts the new ballot-delivery rule; Washington votes as before in November

今年3月的一道行政令要求各州把选民名单交给联邦、由邮政总局只向名单上的人寄选票，华州因此联合多州提告。联邦法官8月27号下了临时禁制令，效期两个星期，政府方面已经提出上诉。华州州务卿办公室说，眼下华州的选举流程没有变化；11月3号大选之前还会怎么变，要看接下来的裁定。

A March executive order told states to hand voter lists to the federal government and directed the Postal Service to mail ballots only to people on that list; Washington joined other states in challenging it. A federal judge granted a temporary restraining order on Aug. 27 that runs for two weeks, and the administration is appealing. The Secretary of State's office says Washington's election process is unchanged at this time; what happens before the Nov. 3 general election depends on the rulings still to come.

《西雅图时报》8月28号报道，肯莫尔(Kenmore)圣爱德华州立公园里由老神学院改建的旅馆，10月底裁掉全部86名员工，停业1年，改建一座有15个池子的北欧式水疗中心。州里的备案把这批裁员写成永久性的，业主丹尼尔斯则说，重开后希望员工人数翻一倍以上、优先请回这批人。旅馆2021年开业，他说这几年受疫情、成本上涨和加拿大游客减少的影响。

The Seattle Times reported on Aug. 28 that the hotel converted from an old seminary inside Saint Edward State Park in Kenmore will lay off all 86 employees at the end of October and close for a year to build a 15-pool Nordic-style spa. The state filing describes the layoffs as permanent, while owner Kevin Daniels says he hopes to more than double the staff when it reopens and to rehire these workers first. The hotel opened in 2021 and he cited the pandemic, rising costs and fewer Canadian visitors.

Back-to-school: $500 for passing a stopped school bus, and it cannot be reduced

华州公共教育总监办公室提醒，校车打出停车牌、红灯闪烁时，在没有中间隔离的双向单车道上，两个方向的车都必须停下。三条以上车道、有中间左转道或有隔离带的路，只有与校车同向的车必须停，反方向的车减速慢行。罚款500美元，按华州法律不得免除也不得减少，接送孙辈上下学的长者尤其要记住这一条。

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction reminds drivers that when a school bus puts out its stop sign and flashes red lights, traffic in both directions must stop on an undivided two-lane road. On roads of three or more lanes, with a centre turn lane or with a median, only traffic travelling the same way as the bus must stop, while the other direction proceeds with caution. The fine is $500 and under Washington law it cannot be waived or reduced — worth remembering for anyone driving grandchildren to school.

非营利机构「长者科技基金会」8月26号在肯特(Kent)长者活动中心办了一场科技诊所，一上午屋里几乎坐满。创办人说，他们把话说白、不用行话，是个「问什么都不丢脸」的地方；除了手机、平板、电脑一对一答疑，还讲人工智能和网络诈骗怎么防。服务免费，机构正在和金县、皮尔斯县更多城市合作，每周日也回西雅图最早那家长者公寓。

The nonprofit Senior Tech Foundation ran a tech clinic at the Kent Senior Activity Center on Aug. 26, and the room was packed for most of the morning. The founder says they keep it plain and jargon-free, a judgement-free place to ask anything; alongside one-to-one help with phones, tablets and computers, they give talks on artificial intelligence and online scams. It is free, and the group is partnering with more cities across King and Pierce counties while still returning each Sunday to the Seattle retirement community where it started.
