8月27号下午三点半前后，有人看见华盛顿湖岸外漂着一块无人的划桨板，板上还搁着私人物品、桨已经漂开；游过去才发现水面下有一个失去反应的男子，是另一位划桨的人把他拖上岸的。西雅图消防说他约60岁，当时没穿救生衣，送到港景医院(Harborview)时情况危急，警方还在调查。消防的公共信息官只说了一句话：下水就穿救生衣——真出事的时候，是没有声音的。

Around 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 27 a passerby noticed an unattended paddleboard off the shore of Lake Washington, personal items still on it and the paddle drifting away; swimming out, they found an unresponsive man below the surface, and another paddleboarder brought him to shore. Seattle Fire put his age at about 60 and said he was not wearing a life vest; he was in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center and police are investigating. The fire department's spokesman had one line: wear a life jacket in the water — when it goes wrong, it makes no sound.

The Seattle Police Department says the budget outlook is unclear, so from Sept. 1 it stops the up-to-$50,000 incentive offered to experienced officers transferring in from other agencies; anyone already in the hiring process or applying by the end of this month still gets it. SPD counts 1,197 sworn personnel, but only 929 are actually deployable to a 911 call. Do not expect a fast car for a non-emergency; for real danger, still call 911.

A partial lunar eclipse turned the moon blood-red over western Washington

8月27号夜里，华州西部不少地方看见了月偏食，月亮泛出暗红色。这种天象不用望远镜、不用买票，站在自家阳台上抬头就能看见。下回街坊群里有人喊一声「出来看月亮」，别嫌麻烦——这一类事，看一次少一次。

On the night of Aug. 27 much of western Washington saw a partial lunar eclipse, the moon turning a dull red. This kind of sight needs no telescope and no ticket — you can see it from your own balcony. Next time word goes round the neighbourhood group, do not think it too much trouble: there are only so many of these left.

A North Bend farmer told KING 5 that a city trail-and-bridge project is taking the land she leases, forcing her to sell livestock and shelve plans to expand. A tenant is not a landowner, and when a public project moves onto the ground nobody is obliged to consult the person renting it. If someone in the family leases a plot or a shopfront on the Eastside, ask before signing: what happens to the lease if the government takes the land.

A Seattle couple who had filed to recall Mayor Katie Wilson went to court on the afternoon of Aug. 27 to withdraw the petition, saying they had new material to look into and wanted legal advice first. "It's not over," they told reporters. A US recall must clear a court before signature-gathering can start, and this round stops here.

Issaquah schools open the year with the district's first bilingual Mandarin preschool

伊萨夸(Issaquah)学区8月27号开学，KING 5说学区今年要添电动校车，还要办学区第一个中文—英文双语学前班。对东区华人家庭来说，这是公立系统头一回把中文摆进学前班。开几个班、怎么报名，学区还没细说，家里有学龄前孙辈的，先把学区网站的通知盯上。

The Issaquah School District started classes on Aug. 27, and KING 5 reports the district is adding electric buses and launching its first bilingual Mandarin preschool program. For Eastside Chinese families this is the first time the public system has put Mandarin into preschool. How many classes and how to apply have not been spelled out, so families with preschool-age grandchildren should watch the district's notices.
