A glacier collapse floods the Nepal–Tibet border: 353 dead so far
The Associated Press reported that on Aug. 26 a glacier collapsed on the Nepal–Tibet border, sending a wall of water and mud several storeys high down the valleys and destroying homes and bridges. Nepal Police told the AP on Thursday that the death toll from the floods had risen to 353, with more than 1,300 still unaccounted for, including foreign tourists and pilgrims. The U.S. Geological Survey first logged an earthquake, then corrected it: the shaking came from the glacier collapse. Nepal's army has airlifted more than 100 people out.
COMMUNITY IMPACTCBS News, citing the Nepal Tourism Board, says 65 U.S. citizens are among the missing, and the U.S. Embassy in Nepal has asked Americans there to get word to their families. If someone at home genuinely cannot be reached, the first step is to ask the tour operator for the manifest and the time of last contact, then report to the State Department — not to sit waiting on a WeChat group.

Half of Bellevue's new speed cameras vandalized
KIRO 7 reported on Aug. 26 that four of the eight speed safety cameras Bellevue installed last week were vandalized over that weekend, the damaged ones on 148th Ave NE and Forest Drive SE. The city's Aug. 13 announcement says the cameras sit near hospitals, parks, school walk zones and corridors with a record of speed-related crashes, and that each location gets a one-month warning period first; for the four installed in August, citations are expected to start in the third week of September, at a $124 fine. Police have added patrols and are asking neighbours for tips.
COMMUNITY IMPACTThe cameras were sited near hospitals, parks and school walk routes — exactly the places older residents cross on the school run and the trip to the shops. Once the warning period ends, a police employee verifies each violation and the citation goes to the registered owner, regardless of who was driving; lend the car to an adult child or a friend and the $124 notice still arrives in the owner's name.

T-Mobile cuts another 77 Washington jobs, starting late September
GeekWire reported on Aug. 26 that Bellevue-based T-Mobile has filed a layoff notice with Washington's Employment Security Department covering 77 state employees between Sept. 21 and Nov. 18 — 63 newly disclosed, plus 14 whose previously announced departures were moved to this autumn. The cuts run from retail mobile experts and account care staff to principal systems architects and senior directors, and seven retail stores will close permanently. The company cut 393 Washington workers in February.
COMMUNITY IMPACTA lot of Eastside Chinese households live off the tech sector, and two rounds of cuts at one company inside a year is not a one-off adjustment. Washington requires a mass layoff to be filed with the state Employment Security Department first, with the dates and job titles in a public document; if someone at home is on the list, the earliest separation date is Sept. 21, and planning can work backwards from that.
