Zillow and Redfin settle with the FTC, reopening competition in rental advertising

联邦贸易委员会和五个州（华州在内）当初起诉西雅图两家公司Zillow和Redfin，理由是两家把租房广告这块市场的竞争做没了：公寓管理公司议价空间变小，广告费可能变贵，房东再把这笔成本转到租客的房租上。本周一开庭前几个钟头，双方达成和解，撤掉了当初那份1亿美元协议里「Redfin退出租房广告市场」的条款。按和解令，Redfin须带着多得多的公寓房源重回市场并投入资金。

Hours before Monday's trial, the two Seattle companies Zillow and Redfin settled with the FTC and five states, Washington among them, undoing the clause in their $100 million deal that kept Redfin out of the rental listings market. The regulators' case was that less competition in apartment advertising weakens property managers' bargaining power, pushes advertising costs up, and leaves landlords passing those costs on to renters. The order requires Redfin to return to the market with far more apartment listings and to invest in the business; Washington Attorney General Nick Brown said consumers will have more choices and will not be subjected to illegally manipulated prices.

华州五县挂出空气质量警报 山火季还没过去

Air-quality alerts across five Washington counties; fire season is not over

据华州烟霾信息网8月24号的通报，喀斯喀特山一线和更东边还有几场火在烧；通报当天，奇兰(Chelan)、道格拉斯、奥卡诺根、基蒂塔斯、瓦拉瓦拉五个县都挂着空气质量警报。通报预计周一下午起东风会把烟送过山，山麓一带和金县东边的空气会差上一天半左右，周二下午西风回来转好。山那边的火季还没过去，有肺病心脏病的长辈，出门前看一眼本地空气监测的读数，比抬头看天色准。

The Washington Smoke Information blog's Aug. 24 update reported fires still burning along the Cascades and further east; that day, air-quality alerts covered Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan, Kittitas and Walla Walla counties. It forecast that an easterly wind from Monday afternoon would push smoke over the mountains, with roughly a day and a half of worse air along the foothills and in eastern King County before westerlies returned Tuesday afternoon. Fire season is not over; older people with lung or heart conditions should check the local air monitor reading before going out — it is more reliable than looking at the sky.

Seattle teachers vote today; whether school opens on time rests on tonight

西雅图公立学校和教师工会卡在三样上：特殊教育的支持、薪酬、班级人数。据西雅图西区博客(West Seattle Blog)8月25号报道，双方谈到深夜，57项议题里还有50项没谈拢；工会8月26号开全员大会，要么通过临时协议，要么表决罢工。距开学只剩一个星期，家里有孙辈在西雅图公校的，这两天留意学区和工会的通知，先商量好万一延后开学谁来看孩子。

West Seattle Blog reported on Aug. 25 that Seattle Public Schools and the teachers' union bargained late into the night with 50 of 57 issues still unresolved, and that the union's general membership meeting on Aug. 26 would either ratify a tentative agreement or vote to strike. The union spokesperson said the sticking points are special-education support, pay and class size. With one week to go before classes start, families with grandchildren in Seattle public schools should watch for notices from the district and the union, and settle now who would mind the children if the opening is delayed.

默瑟岛(Mercer Island)进入野生黑莓采摘季

Wild blackberry season arrives on Mercer Island

据《默瑟岛报》8月25号的时令报道，1年里有10个半月被当成杂草拔掉的喜马拉雅黑莓，从8月起有大约六个礼拜成了全岛的甜头，Luther Burbank Park是岛上有名的采摘点。这是本地少有的不花钱、不用报名、走两步就能做的事，带孙辈去正合适，回来还能顺手做点果酱。要去的话，厚手套和长袖比桶更要紧——刺比想象中密，别为了一颗大的往深处伸手。

The Mercer Island Reporter's seasonal piece on Aug. 25 notes that the Himalayan blackberry, pulled out as a weed for ten and a half months of the year, becomes the island's treat for about six weeks from the start of August, with Luther Burbank Park a well-known picking spot. It is one of the few local outings that costs nothing, needs no sign-up and is a short walk away — good with a grandchild, and there is jam at the end of it. Thick gloves and long sleeves matter more than the size of the bucket: the thorns are denser than they look, so don't reach deep for one big berry.

西雅图征集市民意见 遴选新警察局长

Seattle asks residents for input as it searches for a new police chief

据西雅图西区博客(West Seattle Blog)8月25号报道，市长办公室8月内挂出警察局长职位，同时向全市居民发出一份问卷，9月15号截止，秋天还要开几场社区座谈会。收上来的意见交给“警察局长遴选顾问委员会”，委员会由一位退休的华州最高法院大法官共同主持，最多推荐五名人选进入下一轮考核。按公布的时间表，11月到12月面试决选人，预计2027年年初公布结果。

West Seattle Blog reported on Aug. 25 that the mayor's office will post the police chief job during August and has opened a survey to all city residents, closing Sept. 15, with community forums to follow this autumn. The responses go to a Police Chief Search Advisory Committee, co-chaired by a retired Washington State Supreme Court justice, which may recommend up to five candidates for the next round. On the published timeline, finalists are interviewed in November and December, with a decision expected early in 2027.

伦顿(Renton)Valley Medical癌症中心新一期8月31号接诊

Valley Medical's cancer center in Renton opens its new phase on Aug. 31

据《贝尔维尤报》8月25号报道，位于伦顿(Renton)的Valley Medical Center癌症中心8月20号剪彩，进入1B期，8月31号起病人可以在这里接受更完整的癌症治疗。这家中心从2024年起分阶段施工，剪彩那天有多家癌症相关机构设摊，还请了治疗犬到场。中心里辟出一角，病人可以借用假发和头巾、也能买康复食谱——对住在南金县和东区南边的家庭来说，看诊路近一截，陪护也省一分力气。

The Bellevue Reporter reported on Aug. 25 that the cancer center at Valley Medical Center in Renton held its ribbon cutting on Aug. 20 to open Phase 1B, with patients able to receive fuller cancer care there from Aug. 31. The center has been built in stages since 2024; cancer organizations set up information booths at the ceremony and therapy dogs were brought in. One corner of the center lends wigs and headscarves and sells recovery cookbooks — for families in south King County and the southern Eastside, it is a shorter drive and an easier day for whoever comes along.
