The Seattle Times and PBS NewsHour report that early on Aug. 22 the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods; the White House list includes liquor, dairy, honey, furniture, cosmetics and clothing. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the talks had broken down and announced dollar-for-dollar retaliation from Sept. 8 on U.S. steel, dairy, appliances, electronics, pulp and paper, and farm machinery.

Road rage on a Renton SR 167 off-ramp leaves one man shot

The Renton Reporter says a road-rage incident occurred just before 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, on the off-ramp from southbound SR 167 to South 180th Street: a man driving a Dodge Ram threw some kind of liquid at a man driving a Volkswagen, who fired shots in response. The Ram driver was shot in the shoulder and taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with non-life-threatening injuries; the Volkswagen driver was arrested for investigation of first-degree assault. Washington State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson described the sequence.

GeekWire reports Starbucks filed a state layoff notice on Aug. 20 cutting another 224 jobs at its Seattle headquarters: about 120 are employees who declined to relocate to the company's new Nashville office, and 104 come from the restructuring announced in May, largely in the group that designs, sites and builds its coffeehouses. Three filings this year have now eliminated 537 corporate jobs tied to the Seattle headquarters; the company says the majority of its corporate teams will remain in Seattle.
