US imposes 50% tariffs on Canada; Ottawa vows to match
CBS News reported on Aug. 22 that talks between the US and Canada collapsed before the deadline and that the US is imposing 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian products from early Saturday, covering goods 'ranging from hockey sticks to tongue depressors' and equal to about 5% of Canada's exports to the US. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada 'will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our workers and businesses' and called late US changes to the terms 'unfair, uneconomic' and a reason to question the reliability of any deal; US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada declined to finalize on previously agreed terms. The two countries trade about $880 billion in goods and services a year; Canada had sought concessions on steel, aluminium, autos and lumber and did not get them. The tariffs had originally been set for 12:01 a.m. Wednesday and were delayed three days. The same report notes that the standing US tariff on Canadian goods is 10% and that most Canadian imports are exempt under the USMCA, so the 50% falls only on the $20 billion list.
COMMUNITY IMPACTFirst, the scope: most Canadian imports remain exempt under the USMCA and the 50% falls only on that $20 billion list — it is not 'everything Canadian goes up by half'. Tariffs are paid to customs by the importer; whether and how fast they reach shelf prices depends on inventories and bargaining power, and no one has given a figure, so any claim that 'prices jump tomorrow' should be discounted. Canada is Washington's northern neighbour, and lumber was among the categories on which Ottawa sought relief and did not get it, so if remodelling, roofing or fencing costs move, building materials are where it would show first. Three practical points: do not stockpile — the retaliation list is not out yet; if you are crossing the border to visit family or shop, check the current border and duty-allowance rules before you go; and if you have renovation plans, get the quote in writing and ask how long the price holds.

Seattle mayor signs order to speed up street-safety work
The Urbanist and KIRO Radio report that Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson signed a five-part executive order on Aug. 21 directing the transportation, finance and city-power departments to accelerate street-safety work. It calls for daylighting at 20 intersections by summer 2027; scaling new automated enforcement cameras from four locations to ten by spring 2029; an 'early delivery phase' for five corridors — Rainier Avenue S, Aurora Avenue N, S Jackson Street, 4th Ave S and MLK Jr Way S; and identifying 19 more high-collision locations by fall 2027, with recommendations for speeding up the Vision Zero action plan due January 2027. The order cites 27 people killed on Seattle streets in 2025 and more than 200 left with life-altering injuries.
COMMUNITY IMPACT'Daylighting' means clearing the parking spaces closest to a corner so a turning driver can see someone crossing — for a slower, shorter elder those few metres of sightline matter most. The order changes construction schedules, not traffic law: right-of-way rules are unchanged today, the cameras still have to be installed, and when and how they will ticket is for the transportation department to announce separately. What a Chinese family here can act on is the walking side: cross at signalized intersections, wear light colours after dark, never step out between parked cars. Neither the 20 daylighting intersections nor the 19 further high-collision locations has been named yet; both lists follow the timetable in the order.

Boeing's white-collar union rejects contract, authorizes strike
KIRO Radio and The Seattle Times report that SPEEA (IFPTE Local 2001), the Boeing white-collar union representing about 17,000 engineers, scientists and technical workers, announced its vote on Aug. 21: the Professional Unit (nearly 13,000 engineers and scientists) rejected the contract 64.3% to 35.7%, 7,238 to 4,027; the Technical Unit (more than 4,000 analysts, designers and technicians) rejected it 71.9%, 2,795 to 1,094; turnout was 92% of eligible members and more than 88% also voted to authorize a strike. The rejected package was a 29.4% pay increase over four years — the union's largest wage-pool increase since 1983 — plus three extra paid days off a year, lower mandatory-overtime limits, more virtual work and a joint labour-management committee on the use of artificial intelligence. The union attributed the vote to deep mistrust of Boeing management even though its own negotiating team had unanimously recommended the offer; the current contracts expire Oct. 6 and the union says no stoppage occurs if a deal is reached first.
COMMUNITY IMPACTMost of those 17,000 jobs are in the Puget Sound region, and engineering and technical work is the paycheque behind many Chinese families here — the mortgage on the Eastside, the tuition. Two things must be kept apart: a strike authorization is leverage at the table, not a strike notice; the union says it will first survey members, then return to bargaining, and there is no stoppage if a deal lands before Oct. 6. For a household with someone in the industry the task now is not moving or quitting but three ordinary chores: list your fixed monthly outgoings; find out from the union and HR — not from rumour — exactly how pay and health coverage would work during a stoppage; and schedule the renewals and check-ups you were going to do anyway before October.
