Trump Friday Situation Room meeting ends without decision; $6B Iranian funds in Qatar are the last sticking point

Trump's Friday Situation Room meeting to make a "final determination" on Iran ended without a decision, multiple outlets reported overnight. The remaining sticking point: how to release ~$6 billion in Iranian assets frozen in Qatar (originally from a 2023 South Korea transfer). A U.S. official said the funds would release gradually as food and medical supplies, tied to Iran demining the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is calling guaranteed asset access a red line.

What happened. Friday afternoon Trump told reporters he was heading into the Situation Room to make a 'final determination' on Iran. The meeting ended without a public decision. Reporting overnight from Reuters, Axios, and Iran International all converge on the same remaining issue: the $6 billion in Iranian assets transferred from South Korea to Qatar in 2023 (under a Biden-era prisoner-exchange deal), re-frozen after the October 2023 Hamas attack. Iran has told Doha mediators it needs guaranteed access to these funds as the first concrete step. The U.S. proposal: gradual release in the form of food and medical supplies, tied to Iran's demining and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Why this matters for Chinese-American households. The mechanics now matter more than the framework. (1) Gas: Greater Seattle remains at $5.70+/gallon; once the strait reopens commercially and the U.S. blockade lifts, AAA Washington data points to a $0.30–0.60/gallon drop over four weeks. The food-and-medicine staggered release pattern slows that timeline — pump relief now looks more like late June than early June. (2) Summer flights home to China: SeaTac fuel surcharges on Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei routes stay $200–400 above 2025 level. Set Hopper or Google Flights price-watch alerts this weekend for July/August dates rather than booking now. (3) Asian-supermarket dry goods (soy sauce, rice, noodles imported from Asia) have a 2-week lag behind fuel — relief at T&T and Uwajimaya likely arrives in mid-July.

What to watch. (1) Trump's Truth Social posts over the weekend — confirmed signings historically come with a self-congratulatory post within 24 hours. (2) Iranian Foreign Ministry language: 'final text agreed' = imminent; 'continuing discussions' = delay. (3) WTI crude — sustained below $85 means market is pricing the deal as done. (4) For households waiting to book July flights to China, sit tight through next week; if WTI stays above $95 by Thursday, the deal-induced fuel drop is unlikely before mid-June and booking now is reasonable.

American views
One view
Some U.S. Middle-East analysts say the staggered food-and-medicine release mechanism is itself the breakthrough — both sides save face, Iran gets concrete benefit week by week, and the framework moves toward a signed MOU by mid-June.
Another view
Other U.S. analysts note Iran's hardliners and the IRGC have historically rejected staggered release as 'release in name only' — they put signing odds before June 15 below 50%, and warn an Iranian walkout could push gas back over $6/gallon.

USCIS now issuing Notices to Appear to laid-off H-1B workers even within the 60-day grace period — what Meta-affected families need to know this weekendUSCIS

Immigration attorneys report USCIS has begun issuing Notices to Appear (NTAs — the document that initiates deportation proceedings) to H-1B workers laid off in 2026, in some cases the day after USCIS receives the employer's termination notice — even though the worker is still inside the 60-day grace period. There has been no formal USCIS policy announcement. The trend is especially relevant to families with members affected by this week's Meta cuts (168 wearables workers, last day yesterday).

What changed. The 60-day grace period (codified in 8 CFR 214.1(l)(2) in 2016) has historically been a discretionary but reliable cushion: an H-1B worker laid off had 60 days to find a new sponsor (use H-1B portability), change status (e.g., to B-2 visitor or H-4 dependent), or depart the U.S. Reports from VisaVerge, Berardi Immigration Law, and several Bellevue-Seattle area attorneys describe a new pattern in spring 2026: USCIS issuing the NTA — the document that places the worker into removal proceedings — the day after the employer's termination report. The NTA itself does not invalidate the grace period, but it puts the worker into a parallel deportation track that must be defended in immigration court.

Why this matters for Chinese-American families. Chinese and Indian H-1B workers make up the majority of the visa program, and they are over-represented in the recent Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon hardware-and-research cuts. Specifically: (1) Meta's 168 wearables cut announced this week — most workers had yesterday (Fri May 29) as their last day; the clock starts today. (2) The earlier 1,395-position WARN notice — last day July 22. (3) Families with grandchildren whose parents are on H-1B: if a parent receives an NTA, the household's overall legal status becomes precarious until immigration court resolution (typically 12–24 months). USCIS has also begun denying I-539 change-of-status applications (B-2 visitor or H-4 dependent) filed during the grace period if the agency finds that the applicant was job-searching — calling job search 'not a permissible activity' on B-2.

Practical steps for this weekend. (1) Any family member who received a Meta or similar tech-company termination this past week should call an immigration attorney TODAY (Saturday) rather than Monday — Bellevue and Seattle immigration firms typically have weekend emergency intake. (2) NWIRP (Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, 206-587-4009) — Mandarin and Cantonese intake hours including weekend voicemail with 24-hour return. (3) CISC (Chinese Information & Service Center, 425-292-2009) — maintains a current list of immigration attorneys experienced with NTA defense. (4) Document everything: keep the termination letter, the I-94 record (download from cbp.gov/i94), all USCIS notices, and start an electronic folder of evidence today. (5) If a new H-1B sponsor is lined up, file the I-129 transfer before any NTA issues to maximize portability options. (二)NWIRP(西北移民权利项目,206-587-4009)——有普通话与粤语接待时段,含周末语音留言(24 小时内回电)。(三)CISC(华人资讯与服务中心,425-292-2009)——维护具备 NTA 防守经验的律师名单。

American views
One view
Supporters argue the 60-day grace period was always discretionary; the change tightens USCIS's enforcement of the underlying rule that H-1B status requires active employment, and is consistent with the administration's broader immigration agenda.
Another view
Critics — including the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and most U.S. higher-education and tech-employer associations — say the silent change without any public rule violates due process and pushes legal, tax-paying workers into court proceedings unnecessarily. They expect litigation.

Washington advances bill to legalize psilocybin therapy — magic-mushroom prescriptions through licensed clinics

WA Senate Health Committee passed SB 5921 in Feb 2026, allowing adults to receive psilocybin (the active compound in "magic mushrooms") in supervised therapeutic sessions for PTSD, treatment-resistant depression, and end-of-life anxiety. Builds on the 2023 Psilocybin Services Act + UW Medicine pilot for veterans.

What's legalized: not recreational sale. Patients must visit a state-licensed clinic, take the dose under a trained facilitator's supervision (usually 4–6 hours), and complete preparation + integration sessions before and after. Insurance does not cover it; cost is roughly $1,500–$3,000 per session out-of-pocket. Oregon launched its identical program in 2023 and has dosed about 8,000 patients to date.

Why it's controversial: psilocybin is still a federal Schedule I controlled substance. Patients risk federal liability (rare in practice) and travel restrictions. Most insurance companies refuse to cover anything Schedule I. The therapy benefits — from FDA-recognized Phase III trials — are real for specific conditions, but the framing in mainstream Chinese-American culture is still "illegal recreational drug" rather than "supervised medical therapy."

For our readers: if you or a family member is struggling with treatment-resistant depression or end-of-life anxiety, this option will be available in WA within ~12 months once licensing rolls out. The UW Medicine pilot already accepts veterans + first responders 21+. This is NOT the same as the open-air drug-use debate downtown — different drug, different regulatory framework, different patient population entirely.

American views
One view
Treatment advocates say FDA Phase III trial evidence is overwhelming for treatment-resistant depression; making it accessible in WA gives patients a real alternative when standard SSRIs have failed for years.
Another view
Skeptics argue the supervised-clinic model is a fig leaf — once licensed clinics exist, the recreational diversion problem starts. Oregon's 3-year track record shows treatment outcomes are real but uneven, and the cost prices out exactly the patients who most need it.

WA Attorney General just won $3.3M back from two hospitals that billed low-income patients who qualified for charity care

In April 2026, the WA Attorney General announced two settlements: Renton Collections ($1.5M refund to ~2,000 patients) + Confluence Health ($1.8M refund to ~2,600 patients). Both had collected on bills from patients who legally qualified for free or discounted "Charity Care" but were never told. The pattern: hospitals are required by federal law (IRS §501(r)) AND WA state law to screen low-income patients BEFORE billing — many don't.

What "Charity Care" actually is: every WA nonprofit hospital must waive 100% of the bill for patients under 300% of Federal Poverty Level ($93,600 for family of 4 in 2026) and offer sliding-scale discount up to 400%. Eligibility does NOT require US citizenship — green card holders + most visa categories qualify. Filing the application does NOT affect credit, immigration status, or future medical care."

Why Chinese-American families miss it: hospitals don't volunteer the info. Forms are usually English-only (Overlake offers Chinese; most don't). Many families pay the bill out of pride or fear before discovering they qualified. The AG settlements explicitly cited that these hospitals "did not screen patients for charity care" before sending bills to collections — a federal compliance failure.

What to do this week: (1) If you (or a parent / aunt / uncle) received a hospital bill in the past 4 years (the WA statute-of-limitations window) and your income was under 400% FPL, you may still qualify retroactively. (2) Call the hospital's "Patient Financial Services" line and ask for the Financial Assistance Policy in Chinese if available. (3) For help: CISC 206-624-5633 (Mandarin/Cantonese) or NWIRP. (4) If a hospital already sent you to collections without screening, call the WA AG's Consumer Protection line at 1-800-551-4636 — this is exactly the violation they just sued over.

American views
One view
Patient-advocacy groups call the settlements long overdue — federal Charity Care rules have existed since 2014 (ACA §501(r)), but enforcement has been almost nonexistent. WA AG's precedent now gives every state's AG a playbook.
Another view
Hospital groups argue the compliance burden is real — verifying patient income across language barriers, processing 240-day FAP windows, and absorbing the cost when grants don't cover it. They want reform that simplifies the screening, not bigger penalties.

Frank Bright qualified for the 130th Boston Marathon at 90 — and built a 30-person online community of runners 75+Frank Bright 90

At the April 2026 Boston Marathon, Frank Bright became the race's oldest qualified runner. To qualify, runners over 80 must run a certified marathon under 5:25 — Bright did it at 90. His wife helped him start "Bright Forum," now 30+ runners aged 75+ from across the US who text weekly, swap training notes, and meet in Boston each April. A small picture of what active American aging looks like.

How the Boston qualifying time works: not anyone can run it. Every entrant must run a certified marathon in their age group under a published time — for the 80+ men's group, that's 5 hours 25 minutes. The race is the world's oldest annual marathon (since 1897) and qualifying is a known American senior achievement. About 200 of the 2026 finishers were 80+.

The cultural backdrop: this is a different vision of aging than the Chinese "含饴弄孙" (caring for grandchildren) default. Bright's online community trades information about which orthopedist understands runners over 80, which insurance plans cover ankle MRIs, how to recover faster from long runs, how to avoid bone-density loss. They're engineering the late years the way younger Americans engineer their careers.

For visiting Chinese parents: this doesn't mean Bellevue retirees are all running marathons — most aren't. But the cultural permission structure here is "if you want to do this and your body allows, go." That permission, more than the activity itself, is what visiting parents often find surprising. Quiet retirement is also valid; the difference is the menu of options. Bellevue Senior Center programs Tuesday mornings include "intro to power walking" if a parent's curious.

American views
One view
Some US gerontologists call this the "compression of morbidity" pattern — staying active into the 80s and 90s correlates with shorter end-of-life decline. The community aspect (Bright Forum) is itself protective against dementia.
Another view
Other US writers caution against the "90 is the new 70" narrative — it can pressure people whose health doesn't allow it, and Bright is unusually fortunate. A traditional quiet retirement, with family and gentle daily walks, is equally healthy for most.

Bellevue PD: scammers posing as Chinese police bilked one local victim $1M+ — how the script works, how to refuseBellevue

Bellevue Police are warning of a sharply escalating scam: callers (sometimes WeChat or text) claim to be Chinese police, telling the victim they're under investigation for fraud / trafficking / a fake parcel, and demanding wire transfers "for the investigation." One Bellevue resident lost $1M+ in May 2025; another lost $800K in Dec 2024. The targets are typically aged 25–45 but elders are increasingly hit too.

The exact script: (1) Call comes from a "Chinese consulate" or "Chinese police" number — may show a real-looking +86 prefix via spoofing. (2) Caller addresses victim by full Chinese name, claims a parcel with their ID has been intercepted at customs with contraband, OR that their identity is linked to a Chinese fraud case. (3) "We need to verify your innocence" — victim is told to wire money to a "court holding account" or transfer crypto. (4) Pressure is constant — calls extend over days, victims aren't allowed to consult family. Several victims report being told "do not tell anyone or you will be considered a co-conspirator."

How to refuse: real Chinese law enforcement does NOT call US residents directly. Real consulates do NOT request money transfers under any circumstances. If you get such a call: hang up, do not engage. Block the number. Do not transfer money even "to clear your name." Do not give SSN, bank info, or any verification codes. If a "Chinese police officer" insists, ask them to email the request on official letterhead — they cannot, because there's no real case.

Other local advocates argue the structural fix is law enforcement coordination — most scammers operate from overseas call centers and recover near-zero conviction rates. They push for bank-side intervention (24-hr holds on large transfers from elder accounts) rather than relying on victims to recognize the script.

Hunts Point waterfront just closed at $38M — Eastside's biggest 2026 sale, $47M below its asking peakHunts Point

On April 30, 2026 a 4.3-acre Hunts Point waterfront estate (11,450 sq ft, 5 bed / 8 bath) closed at $38M after months on market. Original asking was $85M. WA state record remains Bezos' $63M Hunts Point sale (2025). The closed sale + the $47M discount tells a clean story about today's ultra-luxury Eastside market: still the country's densest concentration of $20M+ homes, but no longer auction-fever pricing.2026 年 4 月 30 日,Hunts Point 一处 4.3 英亩湖滨庄园(11,450 平方英尺,5 卧 8 卫)以 3,800 万美元成交,挂牌数月。

What "Hunts Point" means: a 0.7-square-mile peninsula on Lake Washington, ~5 minutes east of Bellevue Square. Total population ~400, median home value ~$15M, almost no commercial frontage. Bill Gates lives there. Jeff Bezos used to (sold 2025). The town's 2026 property tax levy funds about 1 police officer per 50 residents — among the highest ratios in the country. Most homes have no walls or gates; safety is bought through dense police coverage, license-plate readers at every entry, and private patrol contracts.

What the discount tells us: the gap between $85M asking and $38M closed reflects post-2024 cooling at the absolute top. Interest rates above 6% have suppressed mortgage-financed luxury buys (most $20M+ buyers pay cash, but cash buyers also wait for price discovery). The buyer profile remains the same: tech founders, generational wealth, occasional foreign-LLC vehicles. The middle-luxury tier ($2–10M, the actual reach of most Eastside homes) has held firmer — down ~5% from 2024 peaks.

For Chinese-American visiting parents touring Medina / Hunts Point: the streetscape is genuinely unusual by Chinese standards — large lots with low-key plantings, no walls, open driveways, sometimes a "Slow / Children at Play" sign. The "invisible class boundary" is enforced by zoning (minimum lot size + setbacks), property tax structure, and the unspoken rule that public-school-district boundaries function as the real selectivity. The 98039 ZIP code is one of the wealthiest in the country.

Some US housing economists see the Eastside luxury market as a long-term "store-of-value" play — Asian + tech wealth concentration keeps Hunts Point + Medina structurally bid even when broader US luxury softens.

Other US writers note that ultra-luxury sales now cluster at large discounts to asking — a sign that aspirational pricing has detached from buyer reality, and that local property-tax bases (which fund our police + schools) may be more fragile than they look.

Two cycles after SFFA, Asian-American admits jumped at MIT (+7pp) — but stayed flat at most elite schools. What Eastside families should know.SFFA

The June 2023 Supreme Court SFFA ruling ended race-conscious admissions. Two cycles in: MIT jumped from 40% → 47% Asian-American (biggest single-year jump at any elite school in modern history); Harvard / Stanford / Cornell stayed flat; Princeton / Yale / Duke slightly dropped. Black enrollment fell sharply across the elite tier. The picture is more complicated than either "huge win for Asian families" or "no change."2023 年 6 月最高法院 SFFA 裁决终结大学录取中"考虑种族"。

What changed: schools can no longer ask "what is your race?" or treat it as a plus/minus factor. They can still consider essays describing how a student's race shaped their life — a workaround many schools now use heavily. Asian-American applicants no longer face documented "personality score" downgrades like Harvard's pre-2023 process used.

The actual two-year data: MIT (fewer essays, more numbers-driven) saw the biggest Asian increase. Harvard built the most aggressive essay-workaround and stayed flat for Asians while Black enrollment fell from 18% to 11.5%. The pattern: more rigid + numbers-focused = bigger Asian gains. More essay-flexible = closer to pre-SFFA outcomes. White enrollment at elite schools held roughly flat — the gains went mostly to Asian applicants, partly to non-elite Hispanic + multi-racial applicants.两年实际数据:MIT(看申论少、重数字)亚裔增幅最大。

For Eastside Chinese-American families with HS-age kids: (1) UW is unaffected — WA had no race-conscious admissions to begin with; UW remains roughly 20% Asian-identified. (2) Top regional private schools (Lakeside, Bush, Bellevue Christian) aren't bound by SFFA but have voluntarily adopted similar practices. (3) The "Chinese-American disadvantage" was legally real at a handful of elite schools and is now barred — but recommendation letters, essays, and "demonstrated interest" still matter enormously. (4) The Asian-applicant pool itself grows 6–8% per year — Asian acceptance percentages can stay flat even while absolute admit counts rise.

American views
One view
Some Asian-American advocates view SFFA as long-overdue justice — Harvard's own data showed Asian applicants needed substantially higher scores than other groups. Equal treatment under the law was the right standard.
Another view
Other US writers caution that "Asian Americans got played" — SFFA was funded by activists fighting affirmative action broadly. Most post-ruling gains went to Asian + white applicants; Black + Latino enrollment fell sharply, reshaping the elite tier in ways the original Chinese-American plaintiffs may not have wanted.

Free, family-friendly, pure instrumental music with no language barrier — ideal for visiting parents and grandkids. Saturday's weather is 62°F partly cloudy — comfortable, bring a light jacket. What it is. Saturday's Columbia Park stop is the central day of Honk! Fest West's annual three-day Memorial-weekend-after street-brass festival. About 30+ Pacific Northwest brass and percussion bands plus several international groups rotate continuously from noon to 8 PM — each band plays a 25-minute set, then a different band takes over while the previous one parades out through the crowd. The style is high-energy and political-comedic: New Orleans second-line, Klezmer, samba, jazz-funk. The crowd is families-with-kids, retired-couples, college students; the field is grass with paved paths around the edge for strollers and walkers.

How to actually go. Columbia Park sits at Rainier Ave S and S Alaska St in the Columbia City neighborhood (south Seattle). By car: 22 minutes from Bellevue via I-90 West to Rainier Ave S exit; paid street parking on Rainier and the side streets (free Sundays). Free 12-spot library lot at SPL Columbia Branch (next door) fills by noon. By transit today: NOT recommended — the 1 Line is in major disruption through downtown (see Local News). The Metro Route 7 bus from downtown Seattle is the practical alternative. Restrooms inside the SPL Columbia Branch (next to the park) — modern, clean, and the library is open until 6 PM. Food trucks rotate along the south edge of the park; bring cash for small purchases.

Insider note. Saturday is the day Honk! Fest's most beloved acts perform — the Mardi Gras-style Sound Off! Brass Band (Seattle), Earth Wind & Brassfire (Bay Area), and Filthy FemCorps (Seattle's all-women feminist brass collective) typically all play between 2 PM and 5 PM. Bring folding chairs if you want to settle in for a longer afternoon; the field has only limited bench seating. The park is a 4-minute walk from Mandarin Storytime regulars' usual lunch spots at Joy Palace dim sum and Saigon Deli — pair the visit with dim sum lunch at 11 AM before the music starts at noon. Honk! Bellevue's flagship free outdoor space: a 53-acre botanical garden with paved paths, mature trees, a rose garden at peak, the Yao Garden (Chinese-influenced waterfall and stones), and currently the Lost Bird Project — six bronze sculptures of extinct North American birds placed throughout the grounds. Saturday's free volunteer-led tour (12 PM, 60 minutes) covers the most accessible paths and ends at the rose garden. Excellent stroller- and walker-friendly outing.

What it is. Bellevue Botanical Garden (since 1992) is one of the Eastside's most loved free public spaces — 53 acres of cultivated gardens, native forest, and demonstration plots, all accessible on paved paths. Highlights right now: the Rose Garden at peak (May 25–early June is the best two-week window), the Yao Garden (a Chinese-influenced quiet space with waterfall, stones, and bamboo, opened 2014), the Lost Bird Project (six 6-foot bronze sculptures of extinct North American birds — passenger pigeon, Carolina parakeet, Labrador duck, great auk, heath hen, and ivory-billed woodpecker — placed throughout the garden through summer), and the original Perennial Border (the garden's signature 17,000-plant display, peak in July).

How to actually go. 12001 Main St in Wilburton, 5 minutes from downtown Bellevue. By car: free 400-spot lot at the visitor center; the lot fills by 11:30 AM weekends in May (rose peak), so arrive by 11 AM for easy parking. By transit: 2 Line from Bellevue Downtown Station to Wilburton Station, 10-minute walk southeast on Main St; the route is paved sidewalk the whole way. The garden is mostly paved with gentle slopes; the Yao Garden and Lost Bird sculptures are all wheelchair-accessible. Restrooms in the visitor center; benches throughout (especially in the Perennial Border and at each Lost Bird sculpture). The visitor center has water bottles, snacks, and a small gift shop.

Insider note. Saturday's noon tour is the most popular — about 25–35 people. Sunday's noon tour (May 31) typically draws 15–20 people; if you prefer a quieter experience, Sunday is the better day. Either day, the Mandarin self-guide brochure at the visitor center is genuinely well-translated (not auto-translated); it covers each Lost Bird sculpture's species and the Yao Garden's design philosophy in clean Mandarin. Pair the visit with lunch at Din Tai Fung at Lincoln Square (8 minutes' drive) or T&T Bellevue's food court (12 minutes). Weather Saturday: 62°F partly cloudy — comfortable, bring a light jacket. 可搭配 Din Tai Fung(鼎泰丰,Lincoln Square 8 分钟车程)或 T&T 贝尔维尤店美食广场(12 分钟车程)作为午餐。

For the dads (and moms who play): Hing Hay Park in the CID is Seattle's de facto Chinese chess (象棋) gathering ground. Saturday mornings, 8–15 retired Chinese-American men set up boards on the brick plaza under the Grand Pavilion (designed in Taipei). The park also has a life-size chess set, ping-pong tables, and a Go table — the social center of the Chinese community's outdoor life on Saturdays. Weather Saturday: 62°F partly cloudy, manageable; pavilion provides covered seating if a shower passes.

What it is. Hing Hay Park (兴海公园, 'Park for Pleasurable Gatherings') is the public square of Seattle's Chinatown-International District — renovated in 2017 with the Taiwanese-built Grand Pavilion. Saturday mornings, a regular group of retired Chinese-American men (most 60–80, mix of Mandarin and Cantonese speakers, several from Guangzhou and a handful from northern China) sets up portable wooden 象棋 boards around the perimeter benches. Friendly and not high-stakes — players cycle in and out, watchers welcome. Some regulars have been coming weekly for 20+ years.

By transit: 2 Line from Bellevue to International District / Chinatown Station — south exit, 3-minute walk. Restrooms at Uwajimaya, Hing Hay Coworks, and Bush Hotel lobby (all 2-minute walk). Benches throughout the park; Grand Pavilion provides covered seating if it rains.

Insider note. First-time visitors: arrive Saturday at 11 AM and walk slowly around the brick plaza — the regulars set up in the south-east corner near the pavilion. Stand and watch one game for 10 minutes; someone usually offers a seat. Unwritten etiquette: don't comment on a move in progress (winks OK; words are not). After the game, regulars often head to Tai Tung (655 S King St, the oldest Chinese restaurant in Seattle, since 1935) or Jade Garden dim sum — joining them is a natural way to build a Saturday rhythm. Bring small bills for snacks at the bakery stalls. AANHPI exhibit at Wing Luke is also one block away — easy to pair.

For the dads (and moms who play): Hing Hay Park in the CID is Seattle's de facto Chinese chess (象棋) gathering ground. Weekend mornings through afternoons, 8–15 retired Chinese-American men set up boards on the brick plaza under the Grand Pavilion (designed and built in Taipei). The park also has a life-size chess set, ping-pong tables, and a Go table — the social center of the Chinese community's outdoor life on Saturdays.

What it is. Hing Hay Park (兴海公园, 'Park for Pleasurable Gatherings') is the public square of Seattle's Chinatown-International District — renovated in 2017 with the addition of the Taiwanese-built Grand Pavilion. Saturday mornings, a regular group of retired Chinese-American men (most are 60–80, mix of Mandarin and Cantonese speakers, several originally from Guangzhou and a handful from northern China) sets up portable wooden 象棋 boards around the perimeter benches. The group is friendly and not competitive in a serious-stakes way — players cycle in and out, watchers welcome.

How to actually go. 423 Maynard Ave S in the CID. By car: 12 minutes from Bellevue via I-90 West, exit James St; paid street parking on Maynard ($2/hour, free Sundays) or free 4-hour parking at Uwajimaya's garage (3 blocks south) — buy something at Uwajimaya to validate. By transit: 2 Line from Bellevue to International District / Chinatown Station — exit south, 3-minute walk to the park. Restrooms at Uwajimaya, Hing Hay Coworks, and Bush Hotel lobby (all 2-minute walk). The park has benches throughout; the Grand Pavilion provides covered seating if it rains.

Insider note. For visiting dads who haven't been before: arrive Saturday at 11 AM and walk slowly around the brick plaza — the regular boards are set up in the south-east corner near the pavilion. Stand and watch one game for 10 minutes; someone usually offers a seat. The unwritten etiquette: don't comment on a move in progress (winks are OK; words are not). After the game, the regulars often head to Tai Tung (655 S King St, the oldest Chinese restaurant in Seattle, since 1935) or Jade Garden dim sum for lunch — joining them is a natural way to build a Saturday rhythm. Bring small bills for snacks at the bakery stalls.

Bellevue Botanical Garden's Saturday-noon guided tour is the easiest cross-section of the 53-acre garden's spring bloom: Perennial Border, Rose Garden, the Yao Garden (donated by the Yao family of Bellevue), and a glimpse of the Ravine Experience suspension bridge. Paved or gently graveled paths; benches every 50 yards; restrooms at the visitor center and Shorts House. The covered visitor center is the rain backup.

What it is. Bellevue Botanical Garden (opened 1992 on the former Shorts family estate) is the Eastside's flagship public garden — 53 acres of cultivated beds, native-plant woodland, water gardens, and the Yao Garden (Chinese-style garden donated by the Yao family of Bellevue, opened 2018). The Saturday-noon walking tour, led by trained volunteer docents, covers the major spring-blooming areas — late May highlights are the rose garden's first full bloom, peonies in the Perennial Border, and the Yao Garden's flowering crabapples. Tour length: 60 minutes; pace is slow, with three rest-bench stops.

How to actually go. Located at 12001 Main St, 5 minutes from downtown Bellevue. Free parking lot at the visitor center; overflow lot south of Shorts House. By bus: Route 271 from Bellevue Transit Center stops two blocks away on Main St & 124th Ave NE. The tour meets at Shorts House (the white historic farmhouse — visible from the parking lot). Restrooms in both the visitor center and Shorts House; benches every 50 yards on the main paths; the Ravine bridge is optional (smooth wooden deck, secure handrails, but does sway slightly). 导览在 Shorts House(白色历史农舍——停车场可见)门口集合。

Insider note. The Yao Garden — designed by Shanghai-trained landscape architect Wei Yao with calligraphy by his daughter, and donated by the Yao family — is the only Chinese-style garden in any Eastside public park. It is at peak in late May (the flowering crabapples turn pink, the moon-gate frames the pavilion). The Saturday-noon tour route now includes the Yao Garden after a route change in 2023; ask the docent if it's included on this Saturday. Free educational brochures in Mandarin are stocked at the visitor center desk. Pair with a tea-and-pastry stop at Belle Pastry (Bellevue Square, 8 minutes) on the way home. 返程可顺道在 Belle Pastry(贝尔维尤广场,8 分钟车程)来一份茶点。

An Eastside fixture for retired Chinese-American residents and visiting parents alike: 30–60 regulars practice 24-form Yang-style tai chi (杨氏太极 24 式) at Crossroads Park most Saturday mornings May through September. Free, no registration, no prerequisite — beginners stand in the back, regulars to the front. The lead instructor, Master Chen (陈老师), is a retired Bellevue physical therapist who has run the group since 2014.

What it is. The Crossroads Park Saturday tai chi group practices the 24-form Yang-style sequence — the same set taught across China since the 1950s and the most accessible entry-level form for elders new to tai chi. The full sequence runs about 6 minutes; the group typically practices it 3–4 times, with brief breaks for water and Mandarin coaching from Master Chen. The setting is the open lawn at Crossroads Park, just east of the Crossroads Bellevue mall. The session is genuinely free — no donations expected, no registration required.

How to actually go. Crossroads Park is at 16000 NE 10th St in Bellevue. Free parking in the Crossroads Mall lot (5-minute walk from the lawn); also street parking on 156th Ave NE. The session meets on the lawn just east of the pavilion — visible from the parking lot as a group of people moving slowly in unison. Restrooms inside the Crossroads Mall (200-yard walk) and at the Crossroads Community Center. Bring water, wear flat-soled shoes (no heels, no flip-flops), and a thin layer (mornings cool, warms by 9:30). The session ends by 10 AM sharp — Master Chen drives to ICHS Bellevue for his volunteer therapy shift right after.

Insider note. Beginners: arrive at 8:50 AM, introduce yourself to Master Chen in Mandarin (he wears a navy windbreaker and stands center-front). He typically pairs new visitors with a steady regular for the first session — the two of you stand in the back-right corner so you can follow without feeling watched. The group lingers about 15 minutes after the session for tea and conversation (homemade thermoses; bring your own cup). For visiting parents staying with adult children in Bellevue, this is the single most reliable way to find a Chinese-speaking social circle in your first month.

The Crossroads Park weekly tai chi group runs its first outdoor session of the 2026 season this Saturday morning. The group has met since 2009; instructor Mrs. Hua Wei leads 24-form Yang style at a gentle pace appropriate for ages 60+ with no prior experience. Sessions are Mandarin/English bilingual. Saturday mornings at Crossroads are also the start of the Crossroads weekend market and food-court rotation — make a 2-hour morning of it.Crossroads

The Crossroads tai chi group is one of the longest-running free community-led tai chi sessions on the Eastside. Mrs. Hua Wei (originally from Beijing, retired registered nurse) has been leading the Saturday morning session since 2014; she teaches the 24-form Yang style — the standardized short form most familiar to anyone who has done tai chi in mainland China. Sessions begin with about 10 minutes of gentle warm-up (joint loosening, slow walking), 35 minutes of the form practice (with English cueing for non-Mandarin speakers), and 15 minutes of cool-down breathing. No registration, no fee, no signed waiver, no equipment.

How to actually go: Crossroads Park is at 16000 NE 10th St, Bellevue — about 7 minutes drive from most central Bellevue addresses, immediately east of Crossroads Bellevue shopping center. Free parking in the large surface lot on the south side; the tai chi group meets on the lawn near the pavilion on the east side of the park. Restrooms are inside the Crossroads Community Center building (200 yards east). Wear comfortable shoes and loose-fitting pants; bring a light layer for the post-session cool-down.

Insider note for our readers: arriving by 8:50 AM puts you in the first wave; the group typically grows from 12 people at 9 AM to 30+ by 9:30 as latecomers join. The session is genuinely beginner-welcome — Mrs. Hua makes a point of pairing first-timers with a regular for the first 20 minutes. After the session ends at 10 AM, the Crossroads weekend market opens at 10 AM with about 25 small-vendor food stalls and a live-music stage; if you stay through 11 AM you can enjoy the music with a hot drink from one of the cafes. The combination — tai chi + market + music — is the gentlest Saturday-morning structure for visiting moms who want a routine they can repeat each weekend.

Tomorrow's AANHPI Heritage Month closing program with the strongest Chinese-American resonance: the Chinese Reconciliation Project Foundation leads a quiet walking conversation at the Chinese Reconciliation Park in Tacoma. The park sits on the site of Tacoma's 1885 Chinese expulsion — Pacific Coast's most violent anti-Chinese incident of the 19th century — and is one of very few U.S. public memorials that explicitly names that history. Paved Commencement Bay waterfront path, Fuzhou Ting pavilion built with stones donated from Tacoma's sister city Fuzhou.

What it is. The Chinese Reconciliation Park (started 1993, current park dedicated 2010, Fuzhou Ting pavilion completed 2011) commemorates the November 3, 1885 Tacoma riot — when a mob led by the mayor and city council forced approximately 200 Chinese residents from their homes, marched them to the railroad tracks south of town, and put them on a train to Portland; the next day, mobs burned the abandoned Chinese neighborhood to the ground. Federal lawsuits failed; no rioters were ever convicted. The park's centerpiece is a granite wall naming every documented Chinese resident expelled — many residents traced their family genealogies back to that wall during their grandparent generation. Sunday's CRPF reflection walks past each historical marker; pace is gentle.

How to actually go. 1741 N Schuster Pkwy in Tacoma's Old Town neighborhood, along Ruston Way / Commencement Bay. By car: 35 minutes from Bellevue via I-405 South to I-5 South, exit Tacoma Ave / Schuster Parkway — free 60-spot lot at the park entrance. By transit: the Sounder S Line runs Sat-Sun service to Tacoma Dome Station, but requires Sound Transit 1 Line connection downtown which is in major disruption today and tomorrow (see Local News) — driving is much faster this weekend. The waterfront path is paved, gently graded, wheelchair-accessible; benches every 50 yards; restrooms at the adjacent Foss Waterway Seaport. Bring a windbreaker — Commencement Bay catches afternoon sea breeze.前往方式:地址 1741 N Schuster Pkwy,位于塔科马 Old Town 街区,沿 Ruston Way / Commencement Bay。

Insider note. The most quietly powerful moment in the walk is the Fuzhou Ting pavilion's stones — every stone was hand-quarried in Fuzhou (福州) and shipped to Tacoma as a gift from the sister city in 2011. Many visiting parents from Fujian province (especially Fuzhou itself) find the stones genuinely moving — touching a stone from one's home soil 7,000 miles away has a quiet effect. Pair the visit with lunch in Tacoma's Stadium District (East-West Cafe is a long-standing Chinese-American restaurant, 8-minute drive) or with the Tacoma Art Museum (Museum District, 6-minute drive) — both add depth to a single Sunday afternoon trip.

★ T&T's new weekly flyer dropped Friday — the post-Memorial-week restock highlights: BLS data flagged yellow corn up nearly 100% YoY nationally, so T&T's $0.49/ear flyer price is genuinely competitive; fresh white tofu 2-for-$3 (the in-store-made block, not packaged); century eggs $3.99 (six per tray, House of Spice brand); Lee Kum Kee Premium soy sauce $4.99 (vs. $6.99 regular); fresh durian $4.99/lb (early Thai season). What's actually worth buying this round. (2) In-store-made fresh white tofu (made daily, sold by the block) at 2-for-$3 — meaningfully fresher than Pulmuone or House of Foods sealed brands; cooks to a noticeably smoother texture in mapo tofu. (3) Century eggs (皮蛋), House of Spice 6-pack at $3.99 — the brand is the most consistent in the Pacific Northwest; pairs with congee or salted-egg tofu. (4) Lee Kum Kee Premium soy sauce 16.9 oz at $4.99 — the senior staple; flyer price beats both Uwajimaya and 99 Ranch this week. (5) Fresh durian at $4.99/lb — first solid Thai-season week; ask staff to pick a ripe one (push the seams with a thumb; soft = ready).

How to actually shop. T&T Bellevue is on the north end of Bellevue Square Mall, ground floor (entrance from the parking garage). The Bellevue Square garage offers 90 minutes free parking with a Bellevue Collection account; for grocery-only trips, ask at customer service for a parking validation (extends to 3 hours free). The store layout: fresh seafood and butcher in the back-left, produce in the back-right, dry goods on both side walls, frozen and deli through the middle. The 'today's hot meals' counter is on the south side — Cantonese roast pork ($14/lb), roast duck ($24 whole), and steamed dim sum. Bilingual flyer at the entrance marks this week's specials.

Honest reality check. (1) T&T tends to be the highest-priced of the three Asian-supermarket pillars (T&T > Uwajimaya > 99 Ranch on overlapping items) but has the freshest produce and the most consistent in-store Cantonese roast/dim sum quality. (2) The T&T Member Card adds Tuesday 11 AM–1 PM senior discount (5% off everything for 60+ with ID) — stackable with weekly flyer specials. (3) For visiting moms, the in-store deli's seasonal congee (red bean, mung bean, century egg + pork) at $6/bowl is a strong quick-lunch option — pair with a Cantonese egg tart from the bakery ($1.50 each). (4) Mooncake pre-order (Mid-Autumn / 中秋节, Sep 24 this year) does NOT open yet — typical T&T schedule is mid-July booking, August fulfillment; do not pre-order yet.

Trader Joe's is the underrated fourth pillar for Bellevue Asian-American kitchens — strong in just-add-water frozen Chinese, Thai, and Korean items at $3–6 prices that meaningfully beat T&T and Uwajimaya's prepared options. This summer's strongest picks: Thai-style mango sticky rice frozen kit ($4.99, restaurant-quality), Just Mango dried slices ($1.99, the company's most-loved Asian snack), frozen scallion pancakes ($3.49 for 4), Mandarin orange chicken ($5.49 for 22 oz). Excellent supplement to T&T for moms who want fewer dishes to wash.

What's actually worth buying. (1) Thai-style mango sticky rice ($4.99 frozen kit) — three frozen pucks of jasmine sticky rice + a sweetened coconut sauce + dried mango; microwave 90 seconds and you have restaurant-quality dessert. Visiting moms typically buy 6 at a time after first try. (2) Just Mango dried slices ($1.99, 3.5 oz) — Trader Joe's #1 dried-fruit by repeat purchase among Asian-American shoppers; the consistent chewiness and lack of added sugar make these healthier than Asian-market alternatives. (3) Frozen scallion pancakes ($3.49 for 4) — 90 seconds in a hot dry pan; the texture is surprisingly close to a Cantonese cha chaan teng version. (4) Mandarin orange chicken (frozen, $5.49 for 22 oz) — TJ's bestselling item period; pair with steamed rice for a 15-minute weeknight meal. (5) Korean-style kimchi pancakes ($3.49 frozen, 6 pieces) — paired with rice and an egg, a complete Korean breakfast under $5.

How to actually shop. TJ Bellevue (15400 NE 20th St) is in the Crossroads area, 6 minutes from H Mart and 4 from Crossroads Mall. Free parking lot in front; wheelchair-accessible; the store is small (single floor, easy to navigate) — visiting parents who feel overwhelmed at Costco or Bellevue Square will find TJ very approachable. The frozen Asian-foods section is on the back-right wall; the snack aisle (Just Mango, seaweed snacks, dried fruit) is in the central aisles. Free coffee samples at the front; small carts (no full-size shopping carts) are easier for elders. Note: TJ does not stock fresh seafood, traditional Chinese sauces (LKK, Pearl River Bridge), or Chinese tea — pair TJ visits with T&T or 99 Ranch for the full kitchen.

Honest reality check. (1) TJ items are 'their own version' — the orange chicken does not taste exactly like Panda Express; the scallion pancake is not from a Taiwanese shop; the mango sticky rice is sweeter than a Bangkok original. Treat them as 'inspired by' rather than 'authentic.' Most visiting parents come to love them on their own terms after 1–2 tries. (2) TJ has no senior discount — but the prices are generally low enough that the discount is built-in compared to Whole Foods (often 30–40% cheaper on similar items). (3) Two practical limitations: no online ordering or delivery (must shop in person), and no membership-card loyalty program. (4) Avoid the 'Trader Ming's' branded items (TJ's Chinese-themed sub-brand) — the quality has slipped vs. the unbranded Asian-frozen items; stick with the latter.

What customers actually order in our area. (1) Dumplings (pork-and-cabbage, chicken-and-chive, lamb-and-cumin) — the #1 category; price at $14–18 per 12-piece order. (2) Hand-pulled noodles and lamian — $16–22 per portion, requires fresh same-day delivery. (3) Three-cup chicken (三杯鸡) — $20–24 per portion. (4) Sichuan dry-pot vegetables — $16 per portion. (5) Char siu / roast pork — $22–28 per portion (per-pound pricing). The Bellevue customer base specifically rewards 'real homestyle' chefs over 'restaurant-style' chefs; Shanghai, Sichuan, and Northeast (东北) regional styles all have specific followings.

Honest reality check. (1) Shef requires you to operate under Washington Cottage Food Permit OR a Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation (MHKO) license — Shef provides paperwork support but you must register with King County Public Health (one-time $200 fee, ~2 weeks). NWIRP and CISC can refer you to a Mandarin-speaking small-business attorney if needed. (2) Work-authorization: green-card holders and U.S. citizens with no issues; visiting moms on B-2 tourist visas should consult NWIRP or CISC before treating Shef as paid work. (3) Income is taxable as self-employment; Shef sends 1099 if you clear $600/year; set aside 25% for federal taxes; ingredients are deductible. (4) Equipment: most kitchens need only small additions — a $30 thermometer, a $20 freezer thermometer, $40 worth of takeout containers, and a kitchen scale. (5) The schedule is genuinely flexible — many successful Shef chefs do not cook Monday through Wednesday; weekends are highest demand.

Instacart Shopper is the lowest-English-barrier earning idea on this page — you go to a familiar Bellevue grocery store (Safeway, QFC, Costco, Bartell), the app shows you a picture of each item to pick, you scan it at checkout, and you drive it to the customer's door (the address auto-loads in Google Maps). Most communication is in-app text. Bellevue's high concentration of working tech families creates steady weekday-evening and weekend demand. Most local shoppers earn $20–35/hour after expenses.

How to actually start. (1) Apply at shoppers.instacart.com. Requirements: 18+, a valid U.S. driver's license, a smartphone (iOS or Android), a car with insurance, ability to lift 50 pounds occasionally. (2) Background check (Checkr) takes 3–7 days. (3) Once approved, attend a free 30-minute video onboarding (the app does a walkthrough — your adult child can be next to you the first time). (4) Set your availability window — Bellevue's strongest hours are 4–8 PM weekdays and 9 AM–2 PM weekends. (5) Accept your first batch — Instacart shows you the store, the item list, the customer address, the base pay, and the estimated tip before you accept. You can decline any batch.如何开始:(一)在 shoppers.instacart.com 申请。

What the work actually looks like. A typical Bellevue batch: drive to QFC Crossroads (5 min from home), park in the QFC lot, open the Instacart Shopper app — it shows you 12–25 items as photos with quantity ('two red apples', 'one half-gallon whole milk Organic Valley brand'). You walk the store, scan each item's barcode at pick-up (the app confirms 'right item'), check out at a special Instacart cashier line (no separate payment — Instacart's pre-paid card is in the app), then drive to the customer's address (3–5 miles, auto-loaded). Drop the bags at the door, take a photo, and the batch is complete. Typical batch time: 45–75 minutes, paying $20–40 total including tip.

Honest reality check. (1) Pay varies meaningfully by day and hour; the highest earnings come from Friday 4–7 PM and Sunday 11 AM–2 PM. Slow times (Tuesday morning) may pay only $15–18/hour effective. (2) Expenses are real: gas, car wear, smartphone data. After expenses, Bellevue average is $20–25/hour effective. (3) Work-authorization: same rules as the other Mom's Corner earning ideas. Green-card holders and U.S. citizens can shop freely; visiting moms on B-2 tourist visas should consult NWIRP or CISC. (4) Income is taxable as self-employment; Instacart sends 1099 if you clear $600/year; standard mileage deduction ($0.67/mile) typically reduces taxable income by 30–50%. (5) For visiting moms specifically, the work doubles as familiarization with American grocery stores — after 2–3 weeks, you know the layouts of QFC and Safeway intimately, which speeds up your own household shopping forever after. (6) Senior considerations: Costco batches involve heavier items; if back/knee discomfort, set Costco off in your preferences.
