Kevin Warsh confirmed as Fed Chair in 54-45 vote — closest in modern history

The Senate confirmed Kevin Warsh, 56, as the next Federal Reserve chair on Wednesday in a 54-45 vote — the closest margin ever for a Fed chair. Trump has repeatedly signaled he expects Warsh to lower rates after months of friction with outgoing chair Jerome Powell.

Warsh becomes the 11th Fed chair of the modern banking era. The vote was almost completely along party lines, with only Pennsylvania Democrat Sen. John Fetterman crossing over to vote for him.

This is Warsh's second stint at the Fed — he served as a governor from 2006–11, a period during which Fed officials initially dismissed dangers from the subprime mortgage meltdown that led to the global financial crisis. Critics raised those calls during his hearings.

For households with savings accounts, mortgages, or CDs, the practical signal is to watch Warsh's first FOMC meeting as chair on June 16–17. If he moves to cut rates faster than the previous Fed schedule, savings yields will fall and refinancing windows could open.

Different views
One view
Some say Warsh will restore market stability — a known quantity with private-sector experience, willing to act fast on rate cuts to support growth and avoid a Fed-induced recession.
Another view
Others worry the 2006–08 record matters: he was at the Fed when warning signs were ignored. And a chair seen as politically aligned with the White House risks undermining the institution's independence.

House blocks Iran war powers resolution in 212-212 tie; Pentagon reportedly weighs renaming operations

On Thursday, House members failed to advance a resolution that would have required Trump to seek congressional authorization for continued military action against Iran. The vote was a tied 212-212. Reporting indicates the Pentagon is considering renaming operations to circumvent War Powers Act restrictions.

A tied vote in the House means the resolution fails. The bipartisan effort included several Republicans who joined most Democrats in trying to assert congressional authority over the ongoing Iran conflict. Supporters argued the constitutional requirement is clear: only Congress can declare war.

Separately, defense correspondents report the Pentagon is exploring administrative options — including renaming the Iran military campaign — to avoid triggering the War Powers Act's 60-day clock for required congressional approval. Legal scholars are split on whether this would survive court challenges.

The war's cumulative cost has now topped $29 billion per administration figures. With each week the financial and political stakes rise; the House is expected to take up another version of the resolution next month.

Different views
One view
Some argue the executive must move fast in wartime — congressional gridlock can't set foreign-policy pace. With Iran actively attacking shipping near Hormuz, the president needs latitude to respond.
Another view
Others say the Constitution gives war powers to Congress for a reason: without that check, presidents can drag the country into open-ended conflicts. The 60-day rule exists precisely to prevent that.

Trump–Xi summit in Beijing ends without major breakthroughs on Taiwan, Iran, or Hormuz

Trump returned from his Beijing state visit Friday without securing the Taiwan arms-package, Iran-mediation, or Strait of Hormuz commitments his team had previewed. Both sides described the talks as "candid" — diplomatic shorthand for "we disagreed."

The three-day visit was the highest-stakes US-China meeting in years. Heading in, the administration had hoped to secure Chinese assistance in pressing Iran to a ceasefire and to win Beijing's acceptance of a long-stalled Taiwan arms package. Neither materialized.

For Chinese-American families: the immediate impact is on goods prices. The current tariff structure remains in place, with China still facing the highest effective rate (around 31%) of any major US trading partner. Asian groceries, especially specialty imported items, continue to absorb the cost.

A trade deal that includes the broader agricultural framework (corn, wheat, beef, pork — not just soybeans) was floated as a possible smaller win. Whether either side announces specifics next week will test how much the summit actually moved.

Different views
One view
Some say "no deal is better than a bad deal" — by walking away, Trump signaled the US will not concede on Taiwan or be pressured on Iran. Strength keeps Beijing engaged.
Another view
Others see a missed opportunity: with both sides hurting from the tariff war and the Iran conflict, a face-saving partial deal was achievable. Walking away costs Americans more at the checkout.

Hormuz tensions escalate: ship seized off UAE, second vessel attacked and sunk near Oman

A commercial ship anchored off the United Arab Emirates was seized Friday and taken toward Iran; a second vessel was attacked and sank near the coast of Oman. Reports indicate Iran's military has now regained access to 30 of its 33 missile sites near the Strait — suggesting earlier US strikes did less long-term damage than claimed.

About 20% of global oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Each incident sends ripple effects through crude oil futures within hours; today's twin events have already pushed Brent above $110 and WTI past $104 in overnight trading.

For households, the practical signal is at the gas pump and the grocery checkout. West Coast prices are typically 80¢–$1 above the US average due to refinery routing; expect $5.80–$6.20/gallon at Eastside stations this weekend.

Public transit is dramatically cheaper than driving right now. 2 Line Bellevue↔Seattle and Sound Transit RRFP for 65+ ($1.50 per ride) remain the lowest-cost options. Hyde Shuttle (free for 55+) covers Eastside errands — schedule by calling (206) 727-6262 the day before.

Supreme Court preserves mifepristone access by mail and telehealth in 7-2 ruling最高法院以 7-2 维持邮寄与远程医疗获取米非司酮(mifepristone)的渠道

The Supreme Court ruled 7-2 Thursday to preserve nationwide mail and telehealth access to mifepristone, the most-used abortion medication in the US. The decision blocks restrictions proposed by lower courts and leaves the FDA's 2021 rules in place.

The case was watched closely as a barometer of how the post-Dobbs court would handle federal drug-regulation authority. The 7-2 ruling crossed conservative-liberal lines: Justices Roberts, Kavanaugh, and Barrett joined the three liberals plus Gorsuch in the majority. Justices Thomas and Alito dissented.

For Chinese-American families, the practical implication is more about FDA authority than abortion per se. The ruling reaffirms that the agency's drug-approval and distribution decisions get strong judicial deference — which matters across the entire prescription-drug landscape.

For Medicare and Medicaid policy specifically, the precedent strengthens FDA decisions on generic biologics, prescription-drug pricing negotiations, and other regulatory questions that affect senior healthcare costs.

Different views
One view
Some say the ruling protects federal regulatory authority — without it, every contested drug decision would fall to a patchwork of state courts, creating chaos for patients and pharmaceutical companies.
Another view
Others argue states should retain the right to set their own health policies in their borders. A nationwide ruling preempts local choice, especially in red states where voters have endorsed restrictions.

For weekend errands across the lakes: I-90 and SR 520 are unaffected.
